I don't see a part #, but that is one jampacked engine bay.

Jesus. What is that orange bumper thing below the chrome. It looks like some damn safety flotation device.

That must have been the additional 4" in length on the new Tacoma.

What is that cover for? Can it be taken off? Is it used as a heat trap?

I assume that's for the upcoming pedestrian safety laws. It's a long way from that bumper to the front frame around the condenser

Yeah this is about right. I found a research paper from Honda proposing a design for a SUV pedestrian safety bumper.
"A front bumper system for use on a Sport Utility Vehicle was designed by Honda R&D Americas, which meets the conflicting requirements for both pedestrian safety and 5 mph impact performance."

    upload_2015-6-23_16-40-43.jpg

Looks similar to the one on the front of the Tacoma.

While digging into this I came across a NHTSA paper showing the results of simulated leg impact testing. I suspect the point of that ugly chinstrap is to be able to hit a fake leg at 25 mph and have it cradled lovingly by the front end, imparting no crippling deformations or severe accelerations to the pedestrian. Much like in this collision with a CR-V.
    upload_2015-6-23_17-22-30.jpg

Not like any of these, which impart enough deformation to snap a femur.
    upload_2015-6-23_17-27-13.jpgupload_2015-6-23_17-27-49.jpgupload_2015-6-23_17-29-16.jpg

I like how the wranglers bumper is particularly effective at breaking legs. The wrangler does have a saving grace on offset impacts though. The leg hits the tire which absorbs a lot of the impact. Although you'd probably immediately get run over by the tire lol.

    upload_2015-6-23_17-40-51.jpg

You can read the paper for the details of the testing. The new tacoma bumper is ugly as hell but it must work pretty well if they stuck it on there anyway.

Sorry for the derail. I had to share.

It's something all new Toyota engines are using, including the Dual VVT-i 1GR-FE that was used on the 4Runner and FJ Cruiser. The Tacoma's 1GR is one of the last engines Toyota is not using 0W20 in.

Well I'm going to start the first official 2016 Tacoma based business - that is ripping off that "bumper" protrusion/tumor. I'll do it with trained alligators like in this video. Now I need a source of trained alligators.
