Yes see my signature. 4x4 2.7 liter.
We were getting 20 mpg U.S. for the first thousand or so miles.

Well then I should be getting better mpg. You are getting better gas mileage than I even with a 4x4. Does your gas have Ethanol?

Probably not. Haven't noticed that stated on the pumps.
    (We are in SoCal)

That may be why you are getting lower gas mileage. I have heard the same thing over on the FJ Cruiser forums.

Anyone in the Texas area know which gas stations do not have Ethanol in them?

Well guess what – my gas mileage is going up… first tank 17.5, second tank 18.3 and third tank is 19.5. This is definitely improvement but I still expect better. All three tanks contained Ethanol.

I just got 24MPG in the hill country over the weekend, and I got 22MPG out of my last tank driving a ton on the highways. My overall average is 21MPG at 10K miles.

Easy there. Allen said that. Not me!

I have heard of people with V6s getting low 20s for MPG, but I have not seen any proof of it. I can't seem to get over 24 MPG out of my 4 Cylinder, and I can ONLY talk for the 2.7L Manual PreRunner AccessCab. :)

Many stations contain up to 5% ethanol in Texas, but THEY HAVE TO LABEL IT!!!

If you think you are getting Ethanol in your gas and they aren't labeling it, that is a big deal. Federal LAW says that they have to display it on the pump.

Toyota does not recommend using any more than 5% Ethanol as you will get water buildup in the engine!

I get about 18 MPG out of the V6 manual (which the manual tranie is supposed to get worse gas mileage). Your MPG depends on how you drive (for me mostly moderate to heavy traffic with very little highway) and the reason there’s not that much of a difference between the I4 and V6 is power to weight ratio. The 6 doesn't have to work as hard to get all that weight movin.

You hit the nail on the head!

I am sure that if I didn't try to rap out my 2.7L everytime I got on the highway, I could get 25+ MPG. Alas, it ain't gonna happen.

That includes driving to Galveston for some (albeit dirty) beach trips, driving to Dallas for a conference for work, driving to League City for training everyday from Houston for 2 weeks, driving back and forth (SA to HOU), and driving to New Orleans once to visit family...

My wife's Rav4 has 15K miles on it, and it is only 3 months older. Of course, that is supposed to be our long trip vehicle. ;)

I have a V6 double cab long bed prerunner. My wife has gotten 22 mpg on one tank. Usually she gets 21/20, she drives very slow and conservative. she also drives a lot of county roads are around 45 mph... When I drive the truck I get 18/19 mpg and usually going 75mph on the interstate. :)

Thank you for that knowledge! The gas out here in Missouri, if it has ethanol, it usually is 10%! Now I have more reason to avoid it!

Check with your dealer and the manual. I was told that by the service manager of Sterling McCall Toyota in Houston, Texas at the new owner orientation.

    Cheers!

WELCOME TO TW! WOW! That is incredible mileage. Couple of questions:

1)What config do you have? (AccessCab, RegularCab, PreRunner, 4WD, Standard, Auto/Manual, etc...)

2)Where are you driving it? (Highway, Round'town, etc...)

3)What type of driver are you? (Aggressive, Laid-back, Coaster, etc...)

4)What kind of modifications do you have on your Tacoma? (Intake, Exhaust, ECU ReProgram, Wheels, Tonneau, etc...

    Congratulations on some awesome mileage!

i was pretty disgusted reading this forum article the night i got home with my new ride. but after the first few tanks im really really happy with the mileage i would like to say i get 30mpg and maybe soon i will.
the truck is bone stock it is a 2x4. 4cyl 5spd. non-prerunner reg. cab.
just bought it for the fuel mileage. i drive mainly rural highway miles with w/ no traffic although many stops. and i drive very conservative. and i shift at exactly the speeds that toyota reccomends.
