I cotemplated trading my friend for the exact same truck for the V6 and cheaper aftermarket. You may find someone willing to trade. It won't be the nicest second gen though.

If you do trade up for a 2nd gen, make sure it's a 4X4 version. They hold their trade in/sale value better then many if not all other trucks out there. The large advantage you have from 2nd over 1st gen is the utilization of a timing chain driven engine over the timing belt driven engines the 1st gen has.

Not necessarily. There are people in your exact same position but looking to get out of their 2nd ten into a 1st. It's actually a little bit more common then you think. In the retrospect, some people may actually be more adept to switching from a 4X4 to a pre runner model 1st gen as well because then you have one less service assembly and service to deal with. (4X4 transfer case, CV axle shafts and related driveline components).

Just be aware there were certain structural improvements performed to the frame namely in the engine mount areas in the 08+ models to prevent engine frame mount collapse failure if you off road even a little bit or even daily drive through rough roads. Something to consider if you want to jump into an early model 2nd gen.

If you want a 2nd gen Prerunner, don't bother with a 4x4. Contrary to internet opinion, 90% don't need or use 4x4, and it doesn't hold value better, it justs costs more in the beginning, and holds that added price for the life of the truck. It isn't like a Prerunner depreciates at 5% annually and a 4x4 only 2%.

    Gah.
