My weekends are open & after RT'15 I'm interested to see how Kelly Flats compares to the difficulty of the Moab trails. BTW, Why are all the really difficult trails have 'Flats' in their name when they are anything but flat. I.E. Coney Flats..., Kelly Flats... , etc? Just throwing it out there.

Kelly Flats actually has quite a large flat section after heart attack hill and before the chutes. It's a residential area. If you ran Kane Creek, the last rocky section could be compared to HAH, but really noco wheeling can't be compared to moab, too different.

Thanks, that's what we were doing, taking kind of slow. Went rafting in the morning.

Looks like s10nick and I will be doing some trail in Boulder canyon (miller rock, ironclads, MSV, haven't decided) on Friday. We will meet up early to beat some of the heat and traffic. If anyone has time and wants to go, post up here or pm me.

I hear from Niles that MSV and Coney Flats are open and from the pictures he sent me the water crossing at the beginning of MSV looks deep and the lake to Coney Flats looks very deep right now!!!

Snorkels DO NOT prevent the damage that water crossings cause. Your engines ability to intake air is already in a relatively high position (considering stock filter location,) built with a box to prevent water from being drawn in to the filter.

I've driven through those water crossings early in the season, without a lift, with the water over the tops of the tires (32") and did fine.

Thank you, I am aware that an engine needs a great deal more prep and modification for going into water that covers the engine. What I was saying is that I have no snorkel or any of the other mods that would protect me against water that is too deep. I am running a KN CAI that worries me more than an oem setup.
anyway, I think I should be fine. I have crossed several times a various depths and never had any issues. Just never this early in the year.

A small handful of select mods.
Correction - Snorkels eliminate 1 of the possible scenario of water damage. Much more is required though. Where the stock filter box is located that box has tiny drain holes in it, if they are not plugged your engine can still get water into the intake even if you have a snorkel. Once plugged the system is water tight.

If you have retained all stock fender flaring (most of us have not) then FORDING through the water with the stock intake in tact should result in a successful crossing. If you have modified the fender flare or the plastic inner fender the stock location for the intake will take on water that a snorkel will help eliminate while FORDING through a water crossing.

There are also numerous electrical locations and connections that should be water proofed as well to avoid water damage. And no matter what you do the alternator is placed in a location that is highly susceptible to water damage. Again if FORDING the water then your chances for success are much greater.

I use the word FORDING in a sense that you maintain a constant forward motion through the water with enough momentum to build a wake in front of you. This keeps the water level lower and away from going into the engine bay. If you stop in the middle of it and it is over the hood, all bets are off.

Correct, they do not prevent all of the damage. Too often do I see people saying "you need a snorkel" when honestly they just need someone to tell them correct info.
