Procastination is my greatest talent, so after 180,000 miles I have finally changed my spark plugs. The truck never ran rough and my fuel economy never changed so I figured all was OK so I put it off.
I finally changed them and I was impressed by how little they were worn. Nice light tan on the insulators, no significant electode wear. In the old days, I would have regapped them and reinstalled, but I swapped them out for a new set of Bosch double platinum.

Amazing and the old plugs do not appear to be platinum.

According to my owners manual, they are iridium and should be changed out at 100,000 miles. I now see that they weren't and that's more impressive.

I know they're not iridiums, my manual says change every 30k. Mine looked much worse than that at 150k

That is a long time and you are really fortunate they came out with out stripping the threads on the heads, but the plug in the picture is not an iridium plug.

77 Iridium and 78 Platinum are next to each other in the periodic table so they are very similar. Some plugs use Iridium for one electrode and Platinum for the other for reasons I don't understand.

I replaced mine at 80k and the truck ran much better after with better fuel economy. I assumed they were the originals. My manual sais every 30k

Hmmm. When I was young many years ago my grandfather, who was an auto parts guy his whole life it seemed, always told me foreign cars should always have Japanese spark plugs. When I had a 1980 Nissan 280ZX he wouldn't let me do anything but a specific Japanese made spark plug.

Was probably NGK or Nippon or something like that. Can't recall now.

My goodness lol... Well, in my opinion I would've replaced them with the copper OEM plugs and just change them at 30k lol... Im almost positive the stock plugs are copper, and they provide better driveabilty characteristics than platinum or iridium but the just don't last as long lol... But apparently you have proven that to be false lol

Soooooo I bought my truck used at 84k miles. I'm now at 96k...do I need to think about changing my spark plugs?? I regularly get 20-22 mpgs and truck runs and idles just fine. Wondering if they have been replaced already (before I bought it). Is there a way to tell without pulling them?
