I am trying to decide on a performance high flow air filter. I know K&N filters are good but I don't want to pay for just the name. I looked at Green brand air filters and the seem like a good option. Can someone provide feedback on alternatives to K&N filters as I am using them as the baseline for comparison.

If you take your truck offroad, it is not recommended to use those oil/cloth type filters. Even if you don't, I would still avoid them. They let in far more dirt/dust than the OEM filters. The performance improvement will be negligible.

Thanks for the information. Since I probably won't be doing much off roading I am fine going with any filter the can get me better performance. I did read up on the oil/cloth and the major issue is people not letting the oil cure long enough before using them.

I would like to get increased gas mileage and if possible hp. Do the wix filters provide anything in that realm of performance?

    Thanks Rock,

I am working with what I have right now. I don't have the funds to go with a cold air yet so I was looking for a stop gap measure. Is there that big of an issue with the cloth filters. Also can you run them dry without oil if that is the biggest problem with them.

What would you recommend for performance improvement then?

The point of a high flow filter is supposed to be more air, so that you can burn more fuel, to make more power. Not going to help mpg.

The best option to pursue this would be to due a tuneup if you haven't done one in a while, so your truck is running as efficiently as possible. The next step I would suggest is weight reduction to give better power to weight ratio, depending on what you have on your truck. Heavy bumpers, wheels or tires will all zap mpgs. Seem like many people run heavy E-load tires (because they are very common in our sizes) when C-load or P tires would save significant rotational weight and offer better mpgs.

Thanks for the info. I am am just not used to getting low gas mileage since this is my first truck after having cars for a while. I am getting roughly 15.79 to 16 MPG from what I can tell.

Is your truck completely stock? What have you done to it so far?

The TRD catback exhaust is advertised as a real 5-8hp bolt on gain. But that is going to be peak hp, and likely not very noticeable for day to day driving assuming you are not being lead footed (other than the sound will be noticeable). Supercharger will obviously give significant performance gains, but also is significantly expensive.

I don't have any air filter recommendations other than OEM. Wix as mentioned above does also make consistently good products, but will also be a paper filter like OEM.

I am running stock so far. I haven't done any performance mods as of yet.

Thanks, know anyone with a 6, he has a 4 banger?. I am thinking that might have a slight impact on what mods might be done.

Sounds like MPG is going to stink all around. So in that case lets go with best performance mods and sink the money into go juice.

I would spend my money elsewhere. You will not see improved MPGs from and air filter. I know at one time there was a class action against K&N for false ads.

Stick with OEM. filters better than anything KnN has to offer and you will see literally no performance / mpg increases even if you went with a FULL CAI.

Thanks everyone for the info. I think I am going to go with a WIX for now and save my cash for other mods. Other than the the SC which is out of my budget right now. At the risk of deviating too much from my original post, what could I do on a budget to crank out more HP from my little beast. I am running stock so far so I have a blank slate guys.

Go with a stock style paper air filter. Wix is a well known and respected company. However, I find that getting the cheap ones from Rock Auto and changing them often works just as well. As for K&N? snake oil...

Take the money you'd spend on a supercharger + other mods and spend it on a performance oriented car. Other than for off roading, performance mods seem mostly pointless on these trucks.

I have an AFE pro dry filter. I like it because it's washable but requires no oil

Yep, go with the AFE pro dry. No oil, high performance air flow, better than OEM. I have that in my truck now. You can really hear the air being sucked in.
