It's all about packaging. The engine block on a V6 is way shorter allowing a smaller hood area and more interior room.
I also miss inline 6's, having one in a Jeep Cherokee and a Toyota Supra.

Well, I don't know what you were doing there but yeah I'd like to see the Gen3 have class leading torque. And by about 30 ft-lbs. It's a wish list, damn sure you would like it also, any truck guy would love to see an engine with higher peak torque than peak HP.

Apparently the 2015 IS300 is getting a 255hp 3.5L. Is it getting a variant of the Tacoma engine or a detuned 2GR-FSE?

OMG, they are putting a truck motor in a luxury sport sedan! :derp:

First form of vtec locked a third lifter driven by an extra came lobe to the other two for each cylinder. Valves open earlier, farther, and much more duration. Only happens during full throttle and typically 5500-6000 rpm and up. Double bump torque curve. Sacrifices dynamic compression for airflow.

Second form of vtec had one intake valve stay nearly closed (opens a smidge to keep fuel from pooling) and the other open normally. At high load and typically 2500+ rpm it would lock the two lifters together so both open. VTEC-E.

One engine, the JDM D15B, could do both of them on the intake side. 130hp and 45mpg out of a 1.5L. Almost 20 years ago.

Biggest function of the variable cam gear on newer engines is to smooth out that jumpy torque curve you get when the engine suddenly can flow 30% more air through it.

Then there's the 1.8L in the civic/HRV with its reverse vtec. Both intake valves driven by one cam lobe and lifter. Under light throttle at speed it'll engage vtec to lock both valves onto the other lobe's lifter that keeps them open way longer into the compression stroke. Think atkinson cycle emulation. That came out in 2006.

Honda skinned the cat 8 ways to Sunday

Toyota could use variable runner intake manifolds too, like GSRs and CR-Vs, but they probably won't. It's a shame, as those are great for boosting torque at both ends of the rpm range.

RPM doesn't scare me. Toyota's (and Honda's) engines aren't prone to show excessive cylinder wear. So many D16Z6/Y8 engines with their 90mm stroke (not much less than Tacoma), and crappy low 1.52:1 rod/stroke ratio and all the ring-wearing side loading forces that come with it, spin 3600 rpm down the highway in 5th gear all day long and make it 500k+ without rebuilds. That is, if the y8's single-drilled crank doesn't spin a rod bearing thanks to the undersized oil pump.

    Whole lotta stuff
Thank you, professor 'o VTec. Thas wha I sayz.;)

I haven't looked into VTec systems in much detail, but indeed, they are quite interesting systems to see and learn about. This last semester of college I took an automotive electrical theory class and a student's dad brought in a Honda accord that was running irregularly. The problem turned out to be the VTec oil control solenoid. It's a wonder how most variable valve timing systems are based on oil pressure. Cool stuff.

Some of you people make me laugh. Those of you who have been critical of the Tacoma essentially want the benefits of a Tundra at the price of a Tacoma. If you want the Tundra, then dig deeper into your wallets you cheap bastards because that truck has what you are looking for.

Here is a news flash for you. The Tacoma never was a real work/tow truck. There are hundreds if not thousands of threads in this forum about modifying your Tacoma to make it what you REALLY want from a performance standpoint. Why? Because the Tacoma is NOT for the serious truck owner. NONE of you are a serious truck owner or you would be buying a Tundra, F250/F350, Sierra, Ram, etc etc. The analogy here is buying a John Deere tractor at home depot and complaining that it does not have the same power that the farmer's John Deere tractor has.

The Tacoma is being produced for the person who will drive it every day to work and then some light use on the weekends. Toyota is not making this truck for YOU because you are the minority. The guys who have a construction or a landscaping business who need a lot of torque and towing ability are going to buy the Tundra and would never even think about buying the Tacoma. Those guys are laughing at you.

I have no problem buying a 2016 Tacoma. If I needed a truck for work, I would buy a work truck....period.

**There is another forum where the Camaro enthusiasts are bitching that the new Camaro does not perform like the Corvette.

*Raises hand* I use my Tacoma for work in construction. Works fine for me. Heck a lot of the construction guys are downsizing from full size to mid size to even cars  However I agree with your post.

Go apples to apples. You can't compare the price of the TRD Pro to an OR Tundra. Compare the OR to the OR or the Pro to the Pro.

I still laugh that Toyota even made a 1794 edition. Talk about stretching to get some name history to make a ranch bosses truck. King Ranch and Long Horn still own that super plush market.

Midsized trucks are literally 90% the size of full sized trucks, and carry 90% of the price tag. The thing is that midsized trucks are less tuned towards the workplace and more tuned towards a weekend warrior.

There are 5 Toyota dealers in my town no one has a new trd pro Tundra on the lot.. The 1794 (killer black with gray leather) had a dealer installed 3 in lift, tires & wheels and shock upgrade on it . list on
Tundra was 56k the Tacoma pro was 45 k list . 10 k off the Tundra & nothing off the Tacoma plus the 3 years 0% financing on the Tundra is a nice piece of change.
The Tundra is a much better buy.
I would never put a domestic in my driveway I dont want my house value to go down.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
I can back you up. I loved my 4cyl Toyota trucks. The 2008 had just as much bottom end as my v6.

The problem for me that finally one me over is after thousands and thousands of miles towing, the 4cyl did the job.. it was working harder than hell and it was slower than a dog. But at the end of the day when I was only getting 1-3 mpg better in any situation with half the power I went 4.0.

I wouldn't be disappointed with the 4cyl again someday but I am happy to have the v6 too.

High-level Tacmoa engineers & designers have said over & over that it's not designed, or intended to be a 'work' truck. Obviously that doesn't mean Tacoma can't be used for any work, it's just not Toyota's solution as a worker truck, straight from the man's mouth.

    http://www.trucktrend.com/features/1509-interview-with-2016-toyota-tacoma-designer-kevin-hunter/

I don't understand some of you guys' butt hurt &/or denial over the fact that Tacoma isn't designed, manufactured, or marketed to be a F-250 competitor.

Im sure it will as well.

I have towed all over the place in 4cyl Yotas. They were slow but always did the job.

And they were no where near as modern or powerful.

I wonder if the 6spd is going to be based off the last and maybe some simple mods to swap gears down the line. A better overdrive would really help the older 6spd on the highway unloaded.
