Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
I don't tow 8000 lbs these days but I have quite a few times.

The truck does very well once you have the bases covered and you don't try to set a land speed record.

The tow rating on Tacoma trucks is a perfectly acceptable and doable amount.

    Stupid is as stupid does....

An intelligent person that does stupid things is stupid.

My Tacoma is used for work, it is a work truck.

If I did tile work or concrete work, I would buy a tundra or a ford.

The brochure for my 5 lug 1999 Tacoma showed it loaded with bricks at a job site, it also showed it with dirt bikes.

My first work truck, a Tacoma, served me for 15 years of abuse, 16' LVL beams loaded on the rack etc. It was also a 2.4 liter, best work truck I have ever owned.

When I was in the market to replace the 1999 taco, i was looking at the Ford Transit and the Tacoma. I bought the Tacoma.

My neighbor has a crew cab Silverado with an 8' bed, it is not a work truck, it is a Texas sized soccer mom commuter.

    The IS350 is the 306hp 3.5L V6 (2GR-FSE) for 2016 (same as 2014, 2015).

Production of the 2016 starts in just a couple of weeks. Maybe official stats, at least torque, aren't too far off.

How much do you figure that load weighs? 1500-2000 lbs?

Looks like 6"x6"x12' cedar (on my phone), I would think much less. Still within spec.

And you call people fanboys .

I could give two shits whose badge is on the front as long as it's reliable and a good buy. Ford sells more full sized trucks than anyone else for a reason, especially since they aren't even the cheapest truck anymore. Actually I saw a stat not to long ago that says Ford has the highest fleet retention of any one brand, even higher than Toyota. Given my experience at work and personally with the F150 I believe it. That's saying something when companies keep putting the same truck back in their fleet.

I was talking about need versus want. I towed a travel trailer with a Tacoma at 5000 lbs weight for a summer because I needed too. It was all I had and even with the Supercharger the truck would often hunt gears in the mountains and ran the transmission hot even in 4. When my wife went looking for a new vehicle the F150 made the top of the list in the end because it can tow 5000 lbs with ease. Ford F150 V8: 13 mpg with TT behind it, rarely ever "hunts" gears in tow/haul mode it usually stays in 5th on inclines, plenty of brakes with an excellent built in controller, and wide enough so the mirrors see properly behind me. Toyota Tacoma 4.0 L TRD S/C: 6-8 mpg with a TT behind it, hunts gears in any sort of wind or on inclines until the tranny is at 240 F even with O/D disabled, no built in brake controller, brakes are suspect if not tuned right (which goes for any truck, but with a good built in controller things are so much easier to get figured out perfectly), and too narrow so that even my towing mirror barely saw behind me 100 feet.

I'll be honest. If it wasn't for how fun my Tacoma is to drive, how nimble I find even my LB offroad, and how even the low payload capacity is useful for 99% of tasks I wouldn't own the Tacoma over a second F150. That being said I love my Tacoma. It's a sharp truck with a great offroad advantage.

It's all about picking the right truck for the job. When you do that things are so much easier. Can a Tacoma tow 8000 lbs. Sure. Can it do it legally or easily. Nope. The Tacoma struggles with over 4000 lbs in my experience. I towed a Uhaul about 500 km and back at 3200 lbs and that thing, with it's low profile, towed a million times better behind the Tacoma than my travel trailer. For that weight the Tacoma is prefect.

Blah Blah Blah. This is getting so stupid. I've owned a F150, Silverado 1500, and now 2 different Tacomas. There all work trucks, just depends on your work. As stated above we have a pop up about 3000lbs loaded and I tow it easily with the Taco. If I had a 6000+ TT I would get a full size Duh! Let this rest

I have to disagree, I drive a 2012 F-550 at work. Nothing but problems, My truck is on a second motor and now its back in the shop for fan clutch, AC and clogged cat.

Smallest truck we have at work are F-350s that play a fuel truck role with tidy tanks on the back.

I strongly believe that Ford gives bulk buyers the best deal.

Work is getting rid of all those F-550s to replace them with 5 ton crew cab Internationals and Freightliners.

I tried looking this up with no luck, but does anyone know how the displacement of an Atkinson/Otto hybrid cycle engine is calculated? Just wondering if the lower compression in the Atkinson cycle is accounted for and possiby lowers the overall displacement value. It doesnt really matter to me since I'd likely go for the 2TR again if getting a 3rd gen, but just curious.

Displacement is still the same. The bore and stroke are no different. The difference is that the intake ports are open during a larger portion of the compression stroke which effectively reduces the compression ratio.

I know how it works, but I've heard of Atkinson/Otto referred to as "variable displacement", just wondered if it factored into how an automotive company might advertise the overall engine displacement. I agree with you though, probably has no bearing on the max displacement volume of the engine.

Huh? Production of the 2015 stops in July and the 2016 begins.

    A GMC Sierra :p?

My dads Lariat had a saggy headliner. It had to do with the way they mounted the sunroof. Basically it left a gap that was easy to get pulled on by anything. My dad went to open the roof one day, got his hand caught on the headliner, and next thing you know it's hanging about an inch low. Ten minutes with two sided tape fixed the problem.

BTW that Lariat just past 400K km at work. Guess Ford can't build truck though according to fanboys like you. How does it feel to be on the other end of that comment

I love my Toyota. I will buy another Toyota when I need to replace this Tacoma. It's silly to say Toyota is the end all or be all brand of reliability though. That day came and past before the million and one issues that now plague their brand just like everyone else.

    I'm here to stay .

My Tacoma does just fine for what I need it for but I'm not stupid enough to stay loyal to a brand that has no higher reliability anymore than their competitors. For christ sake most of our trucks now are built in the USA or Mexico to the exact same standards. The only company that can't seem to build reliably is Ram and that probably has to do more with Fiat than anything else.

Higher resale on a Tundra? Yes, there I would of agreed with you. Not many people buy solely on resale though while it is definitely a factor. That being said I paid easily 10K less for my F150 than a TRD Tundra so that has to be factored in as well.

If memory serves, even the lightest dried 6x6x12 lumber would be upwards of 60 lbs a piece. Green wood higher than that and pressure treated higher still.

I'm not really partial to any manufacturer and there is nothing wrong with a Ford. They are actually pretty darn rugged if you ask me. I drive a f-550 up in the arctic circle on 100 % dirt roads, -60 below winters and the thing had 120,000 miles and over 20,000 hours before it got a new motor!
