If they can get Bozak and Lupul out of there, do it. Not sure what return would be for Lupul since he's injured so often. I think if a team is retaining salary for a player, they must do it for the entirety of that player's contract. So with Kessel as the example here, I'm not sure the Leafs can only retain a few years. Has to be $2m for the 7 yrs that are left on his current deal.

 

The inner workings of the salary retention still boggle me. I'm still unsure about retaining Kessels salary. In Pittsburgh, if he can get back to form which he can, I think he could win the Richard trophy next to someone like Crosby or Malkin. With a true number 1 center, or a superstar like either of those two, Kessel could easily pot 45-50 goals a year. Is that really something that helps Toronto...

Part of me thinks they will keep most of the players for this year and hope Babcock can get more production and better defense out of the team. Not to win a cup, but to drive up there value in a trade next summer. Not sure if that's a smart idea but TO keeps talking about not being in a rush to retain salary.

So I'm reading more into this Richards termination. It sounds like he refused to go to a physical assessment at the end of the season, which apparently would allow LA to terminate his contract. If that's true look out, a whole bunch of "terminations" will be coming to avoid the cap. All you have to do is keep asking a player to see a team doctor or trainer every day and when he doesn't show up can him. What a mess if that happens. The NHLPA will revolt.

That might be why the Leafs are keeping him, if that is true. If Kessel lost 20 pounds and gained some muscle his ceiling is going to be much higher.

Wouldn't it be funny if the King resign a few guys, get up against the cap again, and then the arbitrator ruled against them. Here's to hoping that happens. This is to big a loop hole. LA should have to pay the price for there contract mistakes like everyone else. I won't be surprised if they get away with it though mostly because they're Gary's poster child for hockey in the south.

It's hard to tell if the lack of information coming out is because of how bad what Richards did was or if it is because the Kings are posturing.

 

If this goes through, I can see Shanny paying someone to plant "a bag" on Lupul and call the cops immediately.
