I think I have settled on: American Widgeon (although he didn't have a green head, maybe too young?)

@BabyTaco quick - trumpeter or tundra?

They can be tricky. I know you had brought them up before for your class, so I thought I'd pick on you.

I think it might be a 1st year juvenile? I don't know enough about wigeon plumages, but I know juveniles and females don't have the full green stripe. The slight iridescence leads me to think immature or summer plumage or something.

Thought this was hilarious. Apparently there is a enclosed courtyard at this school and this duck decided to make her nest in the courtyard. With no way out other than to FLY out the ducklings were trapped. So the school planned an escape route to help get the ducks to freedom.
Love the little stragglers slipping and sliding on the waxed floors  Too funny...

    Aww....cute babies!

I was wondering if my birdies would come back to the nest for the next batch or if they've already moved on.

Normally, mine just reuse the old nest (I follow closely every year) but she moved/rebuilt her nest this time for some reason? I'm pretty certain it's the same pair. I'll keep you posted on their progress.

Was in Glacier Park this weekend and saw/heard some new birds. No pics unfortunately.
One was quite talkative- very distinctive call and was the first bird I heard in the AM and the last to quiet down after sunset. Wish I knew what it was, had a really cool call

Just watched PBS/ Nature/ The Sagebrush Sea. Very cool- all about Sage Grouse, etc.

Common loon? Not sure about when they call but I remember learning that they are active in the early and late hours of the day. Any other clues?

Nice, I did some work for grad students studying the leks out in Wyoming. Pretty crazy behaviors!

The birds in Glacier weren't loons. They were in the trees. Only caught a glimpse of one - small (smaller than a robin), light buff belly, darker back. Was staring into the sun so I couldn't look for long!

The Nature show was very interesting. Mostly about the sage grouse but featured all kinds of birds from ravens to kestrels to blubirds. And they mentioned the oil wells and human destruction. Worth a watch if you love birds!
We have a few areas that are heavily protected here in MT because they are prime areas for the grouse. Have to get there for pics one of these days...

Not a bluebird, i know their calls. It was a two part call, first part repeated twice, second part repeated three times and it had a distinct echo/resonance to it. Like "choo choo ta ta ta"
