Factory skid plate? No. Aftermarket? Depends, but probably.

 

A lot of aftermarket ones have holes so you don't have to remove it.

 

Sounds like the hole is a little tight..

Yea the drain/barb on my filter catch fills with mud.

Changed my 09 TRD Sport for the first time.

Easy peasy. I just cut a plastic water bottle in half and used as the oil filter drip pan.

Went with Mobil 1 and OEM filter. Great idea using the oil container as a funnel. Works great!

Cost me $46 for oil and filter and another $25 in a new catch pan and oil filter wrench.

Only spillage was when I accudently knocked over the jug of old oil. Doh!

 

There is a $12 rebate for any 5 qrtz Mobil1 now, expired Mar 15. You can do it online with a pic of the receipt.

 

Thanks for the help guys. Great thread. Just did my first oil change in my taco (after Toyota care was over). I'm no stranger to doing my own maintenance. Did all my own service on my last truck (F-150) and when I saw the filter placement on our truck I thought to myself, "what idiot would put a filter at the top of the engine? That's going to make a huge mess when I pull it!" Thanks to this thread, was done and all cleaned up in less than 15 min. Thanks Chris!

lots of experience with chevy but not with toyota so this helped a ton.

 

Never had a tac so the upside down filter is new to me. Where can i get the tubing to drain the oil from? Looks like itll save some mess.

 

I just use a plastic water bottle it works pretty well

A local hardware store should have tubing. The last time I just placed an empty bottle under the filter drain. It was actually a little easier and cleaner than using the tubing.

 

you can usually wedge it in there so it will stay in place and collect the oil. let it drain out then give it a quick wipe to get rid of the last bit of oil and your good to go.

My 2008 FJ had filter like the 2015 Tacoma Great, The 2012 FJ had a plastic filter bowl under fwd faxtory skid panel, that you use a 3/8 drive to remove plug, screw in a plastic drain tool that came W/new filter, then you unsrew plastic bowl & replace paper element. what a PITA !! WTF were the toyo engineers thinking. I was SO happy when I popped the hood before I bought the Tacoma to see the filter back on top!! The 2012 FJ came facotry 0-20 full synthetic. I drive 100+ mi to work & home daily so I stuck to the 10,000mi change. I haven't looked to see if the Tacoma has dino or synthetic in it. Filler cap says 5-20. I use 1 one the empty new oil qt bottles to catch any oil from filter scupper at least I did on 08 FJ worked great.

Okay, never done an oil change before on my own, so forgive the ignorance please and thank you. My 2014 doesn't seem to have the plug at the bottom of my filter. Any idea why?

Oh, so once I remove the oil filter, the oil in that area will just drain on it's own?
