Kysport I'm sorry you had a bad experience with your Canyon...I guess some are lemons. I don't have 7mo/10K on my Canyon yet, but I do have 5K and can report no problems. I do agree that the transmission shift points aren't to my liking but I understand they have addressed it...haven't taken it in yet. My Canyon seats are way better on my back than my Tacoma. As for the gas mileage the Canyon gets at lease 5 mpg better that my Tacoma ever did. I liked my Tacoma a lot, but the Canyon is better in almost everything I can think of. Haven't heard the JBL stereo so you might be right on that one ha ha.

I am stoked GM released the Colorado. It finally got Toyota to get off their butts and do something about the Tacoma. I hope more enter the mid-size market. Maybe Hyundai/Kia are next.

Ok, who does Consumer Report write for? folks in the NYC area, NOT US. In that part of the world, work vehicles are full sized VANS and BOX TRUCKS due to security issues. To CR, small or mid-sized trucks are tested as alternative to sedans or minivans for day to day driving. They don't haul gravel, pull dual axle trailers loaded with construction equipment. They test next to Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys. It is not that it is BAD data, it is simply the WRONG data.

My family has been reading Consumer Reports back to the 60's and I have had a subscription my entire adult life. It is wonderful for toasters, coffee makers, telephone, appliances and general consumer crap. It is NOT for the guy who lives in the mountains, fixes everything himself and uses the truck as a truck most of the time.

I had an EARLY Chevy S-10 Blazer and while it got 28 MPG on the highway, and the four wheel drive was great in the snow, it was TERRIBLE in many ways.

18 mpg on a modern mid size.... That's it? Wtf?

I get that in my unareodynamic lifted brick. And my dads 5.7 Hemi 4 door 4x4 gets 19

People are naive enough to think that in 2015 smaller automobiles should always get better MPG. When you pay more for a full sized pickup, you are paying for more technology to get better MPG too.

nothing to do with being naive. In 2015, smaller vehicles SHOULD get better mileage then larger vehicles of the same class. Toyota is always late to update their stuff . Hurray for competition and now they will have to increase their performance...even my 2012 prius has outside temperature gauge, adjustable seat height, compass, etc...basic items that nearly all modern vehicles come with.

They need to quit doing updates and just step back & perfect what they've designed. They had what? 9 years with this basic model?
WTH did they do with all that time?

They spent it all on designing the next one.

I've driven the Canyon and several Tacomas. To me, the Canyon's interior was far nicer, it rode better and absolutely gets better fuel economy. The Canyon had real metal trim, soft materials and stitching on the dash, looked far more upscale than the current Tacoma. The buttons all had a nice, solid feel. If you didn't find the seats comfortable, that's one thing, but couldn't you tell that before you bought it? I liked the seats in both the Canyon and the Colorado. I looked over the Canyon and Colorado very thoroughly, and didn't find ANY of the issues that Capt. America referred to.

Maybe they got better. I did my test drives in October and November of 2014.

In terms of reviews and comparison tests, the Twins have compared favorably with the existing Tacoma and Frontier.

I can't, for the life of me, conceive that the Frontier can compare to ANYTHING. It was driving a cheap, used U-Haul...and that was a new one. Horrible ride, crappier handling. I felt bad for the salesman on the test drive, because he could see the continual "WTF" getting deeper and deeper on my face the more I drove it. He knew he not only wasn't getting a sale, but I'd be trashing the Frontier every chance I got.

Yeah, the Tacoma seems far less dated than the Frontier, and that's saying something. I'm hoping for a competitively updated Frontier within the next year or so. The more competition, the better off we'll all be!

Everyone has different opinions. Love my new Tacoma. Hated the Canyon. I'll never make that mistake again.

Of course both twins will be compared favorably when it comes to reviews. Both twins are brand new trucks. It kind of don't make sense when you're comparing it to 10+ year old Tacoma. And funny thing is that 10+ year old Tacoma outsold both twins. Just goes to show consumers know which truck to get.

IMHO, while the Taco has been overall the best available "truck" of its configuration sold in California, that doesn't mean it's as good as it gets.

It just means we can only buy what the manufacturers make available.

Also, There's not a manufacturer in the world who couldn't improve their products in a way that didn't make things quickly obsolete. They choose the opposite because it boosts excitement & short term sales. It costs them the good will of long-term customers though. Flash doesn't trump practicality and quality.

I'm not in love with Toyota, but we've been Toyota fans for over 25 years, so I feel this quite personally. If Toyota wants to operate like GM and FOMOCO and FIATMOPAR, they're going to end up like them as well.

Time will tell, so: Let the best marque win!

Popularity doesn't necessarily mean it's the best(although the Tacoma HAS been the best the last 10 years). The Corolla is the best selling compact, but it's NO where near the best in its class, usually towards the bottom in most comparison tests. The Chrysler 200 always outsells the Mazda 6, yet the Mazda 6 is considered to be by far the superior car. There are countless more examples of this.
