the 6speed in my 2015 is the quietest and smoothest shifting truck transmission I've driven in 30yrs other than the spd my '74 bronco came with. It is a bit noisy and clunky compared to a car, but its a truck...

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
both my 6spds have a fairly loud gear mesh clattery type noise below 1100 rpm or so from day one. Like at the drive through for example.

I would not worry about it.

its not a bad sound to me for clarification its just a noise from low speed metal container full of metal stuff that is doing things.

I get the clattery noise on a gentle take off with light throttle. My solution has been to either take off like an asshole from a stop or just ignore it as annoying as it is. That's about my only gripe with this transmission other than the clutch being a little grabby when cold. It's still better than a Jeep 6 speed I've driven in the past or the MT82 that was in my Mustang.

Should try driving a SM465 sometime. You'll be talking about how wonderful our 6 speeds are in comparison to that notchy, noisy, long throwing dump truck transmission that was the standard of fullsize trucks for a generation. The NP435 used in Dodge and Ford trucks wasn't any better.

The 4L does not like low RPM's they don't have a lot of pull under 2 grand your description sounds like a classic lugging noise.

Yea, I know that there are definitely MUCH worse transmissions out there, there's also MUCH better ones. I could turn this around and say, "Jeez, you ought to drive a BMW 335i or a Civic Si or a Miata or and S2000"

That's not what I meant. Try pushing the gas.

I think if like me you've just come off ten years of driving a small car with a MT --which shifted super-smooth and you could just throw that thing between gears, and there was virtually no noise/clunking/whatever (at least until the last couple months when it started to die)-- into a truck MT that has a very different feel and a few more "normal" sounds, it can be a bit disconcerting that you might be doing something wrong or causing damage to the transmission. I admit I've felt a bit green on the clutch over the last couple weeks, but I think that's mostly because the car vs truck style of shifting and just some natural differences between very different vehicles, figuring out solid shift rpms, and compensating for ten years with a car clutch. I've had a few "shit, I let that out too fast" takeoffs, but its coming together and feeling better the more I drive it.

The answer is the same. No more than 30 minutes ago I drove back from a meeting across the complex sticking to parking lots. I thought I heard a faint knock so was really paying attention to the sounds at both idle and lugging under acceleration. There was the normal taco tic, a very quiet unidentified noise that could be mild detonation or something to do with emissions. I wasn't thinking about this thread at the time but the transmission was quiet.

Changing the oil in mine to Redline MT90 got rid of the clatter almost entirely.

Just picked up a 2015 6 speed last night and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. 1st gear is pretty useless, is it possibly you're not shifting to 2nd quick enough? going too fast in 1st will sound loud

I think it's totally normal. I've got about 6k miles on my truck, and noticed it too. Sometimes it seems louder than others, but so far no harm has come of it. At least I sure hope it's normal..:fingerscrossed:

lol no. I'm not talking about the engine being loud.

I might give that a shot. What's the manual transmission oil change interval? Maybe I'll do it the next time it's due.

I also get this noise. It sounds like noisy gears to me. I only notice it when at a drive through or somewhere else where I'm next to a wall. It doesn't bother me. But I also ride a Harley and that thing is noisy so I'm used to it.

My '15 has been good for the 4 months I've had it. Not the smoothest transmission out there but I've learned to shift it smoothly and it's been a joy to drive. I like how low 1st gear is as it allows crawling through parking lots without the use of the clutch. No strange noises for me but it's a truck transmission, not a car one so I know not to expect it to be.

Quick question for the 6-speed guys....where is your engagement point? Mine is on the high end so I'm just wondering if that's normal.
