Silly question. Is the chain supposed to be hanging through the spare?

i just got a 2015 and there's a chain ( I'm guessing to lower the spare) hanging down through the center of the spare. Is this normal?

Yes, there's supposed to be a line with a wide base that goes through the wheel of the spare. There should be no slack on said line when it's mounted.

Interesting. Never knew that. Seems a bit annoying having a chain dangling and possibly even knocking on the spare's wheel.

Mine does. I double checked the spare and it looks nice and secure. I'll eventually work a way to keep the chain elevated, but It's not a pressing issue for me.

Yes it is normal. You could pile it up on top of the spare, but then it will be rattling around up there.

Ok guys I know I have written it before but please know I appreciate you guys taking the time to answer my questions. I'm a bit ( alight very) anal over my truck, and this is all new to me owning Toyota. It just seemed kind of odd to have a chain just hanging there. Knowing that its normal helps me relax Thanks again guys

According to a Tundra blog, they went to the chain because of cables rusting up and breaking or freezing up to the point of not being able to get the spare down.

There you go. Then you would know the dealer is just yanking your chain. :)

This. Toyota will probably stay with the chain design until the next recall for chains rusting up. All it takes is one weak link...

This member threaded his chain through the lug holes, and locked it.
