Getting rid of the a/c

Today sitting in traffic I realized I don't use my air conditioning. I MIGHT run it 1 or 2 times a summer but I prefer to run with the windows down.

What would the negatives and positives be if I removed the air conditioning from my tacoma? I'm assuming I could still have heat as that gets used a ton.

 

I can't believe you live in Sacramento, like the hottest place in Ca. But, in my opinion will not be ease to reroute the belt and skip the removed A/C unit.

 

Yeah it gets a little warm here lol. Only time I really use it is the stretch of I 5 around red bluff. I'm guessing no a/c was not an option in this motor?

 

If you don't use it it just acts like an idle pully. Taking it off would be more of a hassle than just not running it. Also, I don't know if the 02 uses the ac to defog but my 09 does.

 

You live in california and want to get rid of your AC?? How do you not use it more than 1 or 2 times a year???

 

I guess my mind set was it would be easier to do stuff under the hood without that pump in there.

 

The pump isn't that big is it? What are you looking to do under the hood that you'd benefit from no AC? just curious

 

As long as I am moving, open windows are all I need. Plus sitting in stop and go traffic with the a/c cranked and it's 95 outside makes me uneasy. Same with taking grades with the a/c pumping mid july. I guess I tough it out? Actually, I take the heat well. Once it dips below 55 you can find me in a wool coat or long underwear.

 

Timing belt/water pump which I need to do this month or next, head gasket issues, less clutter.

 

If you remove the condenser from in front of the radiator, I'd have to think you'd gain some engine cooling capacity from better air flow. Theoretically, you gain some power from rerouting the drive belt by skipping the compressor (if this can be done) but its probably negligible compared to just not turning the AC on.

Your resale value will take a definite hit if you can't put it all back (if that's a concern)

The condenser could be a sort of sacrificial guard for your radiator, removing it might make you a bit more likely to catch a rock or stick through it; or is the radiator in front... I forget...

 

You do also realize that when you turn on the defroster the AC is working also. My advice is to leave it alone.

 

There's nothing to worry about running AC in high temperatures, the extra fans running around the radiator actually helps keep the engine cooler than leaving it off. Only thing AC hurts is gas mileage and that's negotiable. I'd just leave it in, be harder to sell the truck later without it in California if you choose to do so. I live in Montana and use mine all the time but my truck is black so it's a necessity.

 

Jesus, I'll take it my a/c's been out and it's hotter than dick here. If you plan on selling..
