Hey there, I was just curious of some of the negative affects that could come from Redlining the Engine. Obviously its not good, but say you were being an idiot and happened to go past the 5.5K Redline on the 3.4L engine with a manual trans near or slightly past 6K RPMS just once. What sorta Ill flavored things might we expect? Engine stalling often? After I hit around 6K (and immediately let off, I was abkle to go maybe 1/2 mile before it stalled while turning at an intersection, and a few more times when letting the engine idle when coasting to a stop. A few hours later after the engine had a chance to cool down, I went in to check everything and it appeared to be working fine and nothing was noticable. Everything felt fine and it shifted well. I thought I noticed smoke when I went to turn the engine off coming from the hood after hiting 6K RPMS but upon further inspection (just by popping the hood and looking/sniffing around) everything looked fine. I was thinking that maybe it couldve been the Timing belt (as its slightly passed the 90K mile and 9 year mark) or perhaps something with the Battery/alternator while spinning at those speeds. The battery doesnt seem to be in the best shape physically but Ive never had a problem in the Arizona heat with starting other then this one time which was at night. The Engine mustve stalled some 7 times before I got to my location afting hitting 6k RPMs while traveling some 2-3 miles.

    Inputs?

I've bounced mine off the rev limiter a few times and it hasn't hurt it? I dunno, good luck, I hope you find the problem.

What did you do to get it to 6K? Down shift into a gear going to fast?

I was accelerating - trying to push the envelope a little bit. I let it go for two long before I shifted up as it seemed to go right up there.

I had a similar issue on a vehicle where i way over revved it and it caused a valve to "float" coming in contact with a piston. This caused a bent valve shaft. With a bent valve stem the valve would not seat properly causing low compression, thus making the engine stall at low RMPs. The vehicle was a motorcycle and over-revving was 11k a little bit different from your situation. However, there are tons of other explainations for whats happening, tough to say through a forum.

I do not think its a heat issue. Over-revving does not cause alot of extra heat, especially for the amount of time your talking about.

Best of luck, if the stalling goes away just keep your fingers crossed and dont do it again.

You didnt hurt anything. Not sure why it stalled, but there is a rev limiter set at about 6100 rpm. The piston speed on the 3.4 is pretty low, even at 5500 rpm, and you would have to spin it to a bit over 6500 before worrying about damaging it. Hell, In the sand dunes, I rode my 2.7 right on the limiter for mins. on end. Never had an issue.

The Rev Limiter kicks in before you could over Rev The engine. thats why its there, On occasion I bounce off of mine when im wheeling...

Moderern engines are ussually limited about 1500 to 2000 rpm, or more, below where they would need to be to get any valve float.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by a valve floating. I would assume this is bad?

Its when the valve no longer makes contact with the lifter/cam lobe. You have to spin an overhead cam engine pretty high for that to happen.

Oh, and no CEL ever came on during this whole process, except of course after it stalled when the engine wasnt on (normal).

Maybe it was just the engine sensing all the fuel at once and decided it was going to adjust the fuel/air mixture it was going to need. Then again, maybe Im giving the 5VZ too much credit. Either way, at this point, I'll just not do it again and pretend like nothing happened and pray that nothing goes wrong.

Agreed but he did say the redline is 5.5k and he went over 6k and didnt say he hit a limiter. i admit valve float is highly unlikely but a 2000 tacoma as durable as they are is not designed for high revving. I dont know why it would be stalling though, seems strange...a 2000 with high miles i wouldnt doubt the valve springs are getting tired making it a little easier to float the valves but again, unlikely. I vote get a compression test done if it keep stalling

He couldnt have gone over 6k without hitting the limiter. If the compression was off, his truck would be running rough.

Your fine. ;) FWIW, running it to the redline now and then is not a bad thing. I try to do it every couple of weeks. Just dont break any traffic laws.

sorry didnt read this. Thought you over-revved downshifting. I agree with others you can hit your limiter without issues, thats it purpose.

Cool, Thats a Relief. I'll still run her easy for the next while. I've running her as hard as I've been working. Time we both deserve a break. Too bad only one of us will get it. HA!

Redline can be reached in first gear without any laws being broken. Also, when off roading......

With that, I wave to you in a friendly manner. :)
