Wolf how bout some pics?

 

soon... the cross bars need to be 1-1/8th inch diameter and they don't sell weird size pipe like that at Lowes. So i found some on ebay for 44 bucks with shipping they will be here Thursday and hopefully installed this weekend but it is Halloween and i am in college so thats a big maybe.

 

mkay fellas well i finally went to mount my rack and ran into some issues i accidentally pierced the headliner in one spot(its not that bad really)!!!! and one of the fasteners broke so i need to call Yakima and get a replacement so i could only install half of my rack

It was a pretty easy install i started by assembling everything and getting everything centered and where i wanted it on my roof. then i started with a 1/8th drill bit and made my way one drill bit at a time up until i hit 3/8ths at this point the hole was barely too small but if i went the next drill but size up it would have been to large so i hit the hole with my dremel and a grinding bit.






I then touched up the marks with some paint, applied silicone to both sides of the fasteners attached the landing pads then the roof rack and DONE!!!!

How did you get your signal lights to shine all of the time?

 

Looks good wolf. So the fasteners only go through the sheet metal? How strong do you say that rack is?

Yup the fasteners where actually pretty thick, and the roof was MUCH thicker than i was expecting. so i have absolutely zero worries about strength. I am not going to ever put more than 100 up there because the basket i plan to get is only rated that far. The landing pads and fasteners where rated at 150lbs and honestly i can believe it. After install i tried to "break them" and i was shaking the whole truck and the rack didn't move a millimeter.

 

Thanks so much that's exactly what I wanted to know. I'l be doing the same thing for my truck as it looks to be the most economical and aesthetically pleasing way to mount up a rack on xtra cabs. I've been searching for quite some time and this seems to be the solution. Cheers!

 

so one of the fasteners broke i called yakima and they sent me a new one with 1 day shipping for 11 bucks...i think its fair so the back part of the rack should be one next weekend.

 

does anyone know if the yakima megawarrior is too wide for a first gen camper top? trying to decide between the megawarrior or loadwarrior

 

I'm thinkin just go to their website and search the dimensions..

i have but i still can decide, the megawarrior hangs over the side just a tiny bit while the loadwarrior doesnt. im just trying to see if the megawarrior will look retarded on it or not

 

veg hed, What you did with the racks on your truck is exactly what I want to do with my '04. What base is that on the canopy? Thule 300?

 

How does the rack hold to heavier weights if the only support is from the sheet metal? Are the holes centered on the roof supports?

Thank you for the informative reply. Just curious why you switched to the TB 60 tracks? From your pics it looks like the 1064 clips rubbed on the door and maybe an air leak from the door seal being squashed.? Do the tracks work better? Did you have to take the headliner out to mount them? I don't plan on putting a lot of weight up there, just a clipper canoe.

 

I hacked up a rack off a wrecked blazer... PITA but it looks ok I think and it works...

 

Sorry for the late reply. I've been working out in the wilderness for the past 3 weeks.

Anyway, the TB60 Tracks go on the camper shell above the bed. I switched because I liked the versatility of being able to move the foot packs and bars up and down. But the false gutter mounts worked just as well. I switched over when I sold my old camper shell and picked up a new one.

I also haul a canoe, bikes, a rocket box, wood from Home Depot, whatever, on top and I have never had a problem with either set up.

The clips on the cab that fit where the door closes have never caused an air leak or water leak in the 3+ years they have been on there. It's an easy install and I did not have to take out the headliner.

I know some people just drill into the top of the cab and permanently mount racks but I would never do this. To me it doesn't make sense because Thule makes an alternative that is super easy to install without removing the headliner and without drilling into your cab. Plus if you put some weight on there I'd image it would dent your cab. But that's just my 2 cents.

 

totally bring back an old thread but people dont like it when you create a new thread. I want to put a roof rack on my access cab with possibly a basket and was wondering what it might look like. If i had the cash id just go with a prinsu but i'm poor and cant afford something that purdy.

 

I just put a "new" Yakima rack on my 96 ext cab for far less than retail.
I purchased bars off Craigslist and the towers, clips and a short roof adapter off eBay.
My set up:
Yakima SST towers with locks - old, but ReRack in Portland had them on their eBay store.
Y6 clipsfound - some on eBay.
Yakima Stretch Kit for SST towers - old, but ReRack in Portland had them on their eBay store.
58" load bars.
Total cost was about $130. The SST stuff is old. Yakima stopped it in 1996 or so, but the items ReRack sold me had never been used.
