I myself I'm not to worried, I have no issues driving in snow, but I'm more worried about the wife, if I'm not able to take her to work.

Sand and winter tires. Give your wife every advantage and she will be fine.

I've had the issue with my '10. Happened more with my shitty Rugged Fails before I replaced them though.

You do know that in any situation you can stop in shorter distances without abs than with it. Only reason for abs is to be able to steer while braking to avoid an object in front of you. That's why no race cars have abs. Abs is for the average to below average driver that can't threshold brake. I have my abs disabled on my track car and will do the same on my 2011 Tacoma.

    :notsure:

The theory of ABS allows for shorter stopping distances on surfaces that do not pile like ice or pavement, but the reality of the limitations of the software and machinery that pumps the brakes eliminates this advantage. Look up static fricition versus sliding friction and you'll understand what I mean. You may already know about this in how your "racecar" performs after and before it looses the contact patch when you take a turn to hard. Anyways, the blank statement that any good driver can out brake ABS is in general false. TBH most drivers, even those with years of experience, can not consistently maintain a good threshold brake. If you take a training course in a skid car it will open your eyes.

Personally, I leave my ABS on. If I were to whack into something on ice, which to this point I never have, it will be because I was speeding and not driving for the conditions rather than the fault of the ABS. While I do believe there is something wrong with certain ABS systems on certain Tacomas, I am also reasonably sure that most of the accidents involving ABS were caused by the driver not driving for the conditions. For those people who have issues with their ABS go ahead and disable it. I won't be turning things off in my car that effect the VSC because I've seen it in action.

I have the kill switch but to be honest I have yet to use it even offroad. In 4 low downhill in first gear aired down to ~15 PSI I have, as of yet, never had a problem maintaining good controlled contact even on really loose course gravel.

The poster wants better ways to get his wife down the driveway. Disabling here ABS and VSC might help with that in certain situations, but it could also kill her on the highway if she over steers to avoid an obstacle.

Lots of people I know sand their driveway. It takes less time than it takes to plow it and, other than another 3 dollars worth of playground sand, it doesn't cost a whole bunch to do it.

Winter tires are just a no brainer.

Why winch when he could just get her a half track. Those things bite into the ice ok I think.

This Caused me to hit someone today. Its 100+ degrees and dry as a bone here. I was 2nd in line at a red light. the light turned green, the car in front of me went and I followed. 1/2 way through the intersection(I wasn't in the intersection yet), she slammed on her brakes (she looked down the street we were crossing, saw a fire truck a block away and panicked....@#$&$%@ IDIOT!!!). By now, I'm doing about 10mph. I put the clutch to the floor and stomp on the brake pedal. the brakes start to engage, but then my brake pedal locks solid, and the brakes completely release and BAM!!!! I reacted in plenty of time to stop, but my truck refused. The insurance says it's my fault, but this one is on Toyota.....but it's my rates that are going up. And if it were a pedestrian that ran out in front of me, they wold be dead...NOT GOOD AT ALL!!!!

If anyone has had a similar issue, please PM me and/or send me links to threads if you know of any. PLEASE. I'm seeking legal assistance with this starting Monday, so any accounts of problems like this would be greatly helpful.

    Thanks,
    Shawn G.

Any chance the intersection had a traffic camera?

See if there's any way to pull any recorded data for brake pressure and calculated coefficient of friction off the can bus, that would easily make your case.

No camera that I saw(but I wasn't looking). I'll have to go back and check. Steve o 77, what is the can bus(is that the "black box" thing)?

Funny you just brought this back up. I was just thinking about looking up the abs disable mod to get ready for the winter.
