I'm planning a trip to CO later this summer and I'd like to take my atv and wife's motorcycle with. I have a trailer but would like to consolidate if I can by putting the atv in the bed and the motorcycle (CRF250) on a hitch mounted carrier. To use the hitch carrier, I have to be able to close the tailgate. I saw a google pic of someone who put the front wheels up on top of a toolbox to get the room needed to get the tailgate closed. This is a mock up of what I came up with today. Will beef it up over the next few days. Just curious what you guys and gals think. Would you haul it like this for 3,000+ miles?

BTW, I already have a tailgate reinforcement plate and Firestone airbags installed.

ATV is a 2012 Polaris Sportsman 500 HO with a 2" Highlifter lift and 26" tires.

I'm going to put a barrier in front of the tires so they can't hit the window. Just wanted to see if it would fit (and it does). Now I can tweak my design. Will probably use wheel chocks of some kind to keep it from moving.

Straps, straps, straps Haha. You'll be fine. Check straps often. Don't expect to get any decent MPG. The quad looks like a big parachute.

I would consider a bigger trailer maybe rent one of you don't have one big enough and tow the 4 wheeler and motorcycle in it. Use your bed for your other gear and whatnot.

Once I get the design down, I'll take a test run to the cabin or something. If it does drag too much I may just go with the trailer. I took the trailer a couple years ago and got stuck trying to turn around on some trails. Thought this might help with that.

If you're gonna haul it for 3,000 miles, start squirreling away money for gas. ;)

I can see that but you had said you're taking a trailer already. I'd just go with that. Same things gonna happen if it's a small trailer or big. Try it out let us know. And I would do it on a crappy, windy and rainy day too. That way it is worse case scenario you know you're good to go.

No. The goal is not to take the trailer. I have one, but if I can avoid taking it I will.

Load 4 wheeler backward , front wheels like you have in pic. except at the tailgate. Less drag and chance of coming through. Maybe.

I put a 2006 honda rancher in my bed and the mileage doesn't really change, usually haul it 120 miles, not 3000 but , then again i didn't have mine in full kite position either

The rear bumper on the atv sticks out quite a bit. If I backed it in it would definitely break the rear window. Plus I'd have to jack the front up somehow to close the tailgate.

Looks great! Here is a pic for a little inspiration. I like how the front wheels drop down into a bit of a well making it near impossible to smash your window once strapped. Have also seen them built so the area below the front of the atv is a lockable tool box / cabinet.

That's exactly what I'd like to build...if I knew how to weld. Guess I have a new hobby to pick up. I was just thinking about how to get the front tires to dip a little. Hmmmm....

you can pick up a stick welder pretty cheap, and there are a lot of youtube videos on how to weld. just go to a scrap yard and pick up some scrap to practice with
