Just a bunch of old crap
Matt took the Condor jungle bowie and modified it. I never see him use the hole for anything, and the grooves really have no use except for bloodletting like with a bayonet. It's balanced to be a great chopper, and balanced lengthwise to be spun as a drill. I like the old school sheath with just the belt flap instead of a loop.

I think the hole is for a nail so you can workout it like a paper cutter ???

    Like a skookum bush tool.

i just lost my old Old Timer 50T. pretty sure i dropped it at the Jurassic World Movie theater. i was crushed. started carrying a big badass Benchmade i had and it just felt giant.

i just ordered my first GEC. i opted for the #99 Wall Street with the black micarta handles. should get it in a few days. your northwoods are damn nice!! it took a long time for me to decode the GEC website..talk about a billion options. effen confusing.

your knives really inspired me..i love the profiles!! i almost got my first WharnCliffe shape blade, but got the Spearpoint since i use them at work and might snap the fine tip.

Picked up a couple of new to me sharp things today from my dad's house...they were sitting in his camping box in the garage

    Anyone know much about either?

Best I can figure out so far is the hatchet is a Norlund Hudson Bay and the knife came out of a military mess kit circa WW2 thru Korea

What's the quality I'm working with? Good to go stuff or toss it in my camping box for a rainy day?

Nice! You'll have to let me know your thoughts on the Wall Street. I don't have one but they have some great reviews. Should be a great knife in the spear point. You'll probably want to sharpen it when it gets to you, as they don't come shaving sharp, but 1095 is probably the easiest carbon steel to sharpen and most GEC blade profiles are pretty thin and easy to get really sharp.

I should get it today. Prob the only solid reason I came to work was that I had it shipped to my office.

Jeff, that hatchet is fantastic quality Norlund which is highly prized amongst bushcraft groups. You'll not find a better hatchet, and that one seems to have the original handle and sticker still somewhat intact. That deserves a proper clean up and a life of adoration and maintenance to keep it pristine. You can definitely user her, she'll treat you well.

The mess kit knife I'm not sure of, but the Norlund is the cherry of the group. Congrats on that one.

Good deal, I know my dad tends to not buy crappy gear, but he didn't remember where either of them came from. The mess kit knife had ZERO edge on it...as in I couldn't slice hot butter with it, but a few passes on the Worksharp and I could probably shave with the stupid thing...unknown how long it'll hold the edge

The hatchet feels good in the hand, and def good to know it's quality. I'll get around to cleaning it up and sharpening it soon enough, but don't know that I need to do much with it. It works out because I was looking for a quality hatchet to throw in a backpack and this will fit the bill quite nicely...especially for the Free.99 price I paid

No doubt. Doubt the mess kit knife was intended for much of an edge, but if it holds on that'd be pretty cool.

Try BLO on the handle for the hatchet. If it has a veneer on it, you'll want to sand it off and then apply BLO.

    It's okay.

Blade lockup is moderate. Some movement back to front. Fit/Finish is great. Lacks the "heft" of my lost 50T.

Very sharp. I'll strop it at home to polish the edge. Should work fine, if I don't lose it.

Sorry you don't love it. I agree that if there's a weakness in the GEC patterns, it's the lockbacks and their wiggle. I've migrated away from their lockbacks, as their slipjoints are pretty firm and the halfstop is part of the coolness of traditionals. The 99 is a really new pattern and not one of their most popular. If you don't like it, post it on eBay. There's a strong second hand market for GEC and I'd be really surprised if you lost 10% on the turnaround.

Thanks bud. The slip joints are solid? I hear stories of broken nails. Haha.

Btw. I stropped it. Leather belt, green compound. I could do heart surgery. The thing is profoundly sharp.

    (Getting better:))
