You don't necessarily need a cable, it can help with ease of programming, but yes all radios must be pre programmed for a specific frequency.

so it needs to be programmed before Sunday? we can't program the channel once we're all together? that's assuming a few people have HAM radios by then.

We can manually input all frequencies and PL Tones( I'll explain Sunday).

ok guys, Riley just gave me the break down on ham radios and they are better to have then cb radios. they have better range and clearer signals

if your going to get one here is a list of things to look for, and tips !

1. tri power is best witch mean it is capable of 1,4,8 watts. ( more watts= more power = better range
2. 400-520 mhz frequency
3. getting an upgraded antenna is recommended, but we should be ok for this weekend
4. you can get cited for not being certified for using a ham radio, for having the ability to broadcast and inter fear with police stations, just do not abuse the radio and just use it for what we are getting them for
5. just use them for off roading, to be able to communicate with your group nothing else. but in the future if you have the chance, get certified it cost $15-25 bucks and its a simple test
6. im not a pro at hams i dont even have one yet so please add on people, thanks
