Thanks Chad, glad you approve. :D

I'd suspect that with the HD brackets there'd need to be some tweaking. Don't know if all Yak boxes have had similar mounts, with mine on HD I'd either need longer bolts w/ the stock mounts or start from scratch w/ new bolts & some washers to mount thru the slots.

    Where there's a will there's a way.

Can you work with/call RockyMounts to see if their BrassNuckles bike rack will fit on your bar? If so I would certainly by them. In addition, would your bars support 4 bikes about 85 lbs (21 lbs each)?

I want to use my bed for gear and put bikes over the top of that.

There's always a way to get this stuff to mount.

The bar can support a load of 400 lbs, so what you're looking to carry won't be a problem.

So i'm looking at this for a couple kayaks (with a hitch-extender for the rear rail). How much weight do the standard ones support? The kayaks are only about 50 pounds each and I'm only planning on carrying to anyway.

You should be able to carry two kayaks on the standard ones, but to be safe, I would recommend the XRXS version.

Thanks, I saw those, but quite frankly I like the standard or the HD ones better. Is there a significant difference between the HD ones and the XRXS version? If anything I think the raised height off the bed sides would be good for a kayak.

All the products look great, I'm starting to save for a bed-overhaul (side rails, tailgate reinforcement) and some crossbars

Strength wise, yes. The HD bars are ridiculously strong, probably overkill for kayaks. I designed them with RTT's in mind.

They do not. Your truck should have four of them.

Liked these bars for my new RTT so I pulled the trigger and bought a set. Shipped and packaged well, no scratches, nice set of bars. Unfortunately my tacoma cleats do not clamp tight enough to keep the bars from moving up and down when installed. Not good with a heavy RTT wanting to bounce around on a rough road. Cable ties was the suggested solution by the vendor, not sure if this is a good long term route. Another discussion lead to some drilling of holes to fasten the bar directly to the outside edges of the cleat.....I will be testing them later in the week to see how they hold up.

How is that possible? I have the standard bars with the cargo basket and they've never moved. I have to make sure the knobs are fully depressed on each one to get the bar to move at all.

Take a look at the pictures of mounting them at the beginning of this thread. If the cleat does not provide enough force to really tighten up, the bar moves around and up and down because of the large hole for the cleats bolt to go through. I think the normal bar attaches directly to the cleat with bolts, hence no movement.

So I'm looking to put together a roof basket storage solution similar to this...

    20140321_132452_e5dd248bd53bc5dd91aa3577b6669c7c793ba60b.jpg

I'd like to go with HD cross bars instead. However, I've got an All Pro Offroad bed rack that covers the entire length of the factory cleat rails.

    [IMG] [IMG]

To mount the cross bar in lieu of the bed rack, I'd drill out the flat side of the hole in the cleat and replace the T-bolt with a standard bolt. I figure I'd probably have to flatten the bottom on the cleat to make things line up as well. The other thing is I will have to find some type of large washer to cover the loop part of the cross bar.

Do you think this setup will work?

It should work. You'll want a fender washer.

Wanted to post some pictures of what I've done with these bars. Hopefully other users find this useful.

I bought a pair of these bars to try and replicate what SCHMEGGA did with his build.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/schmeggas-08-black-silver-build.159898/page-2#post-3325687
    [IMG]

Well my kayaks ended up being a little bit longer (9.5 foot instead of 8.25). Between the extra length and the fact that REI didn't have any J-hooks available at their store when I picked up the kayaks (wtf?)

So I ended up doing this janky in-the-bed strapped down setup. It worked to get them home, but it wasn't great. I am taking a trip at the end of June which involves a 4-hour drive into northern Michigan. I'm going to have 4 people in the cab, 4 people worth of luggage and food for 8 in a cooler (another group is meeting us up there). So having my bed accessible is an absolute must based on this trip.

I ended up adjusting my initial plans (SCHMEGGA's design) and going with a hybrid approach with one bed crossbar and then another crossbar supported by the trailer hitch. This hitch crossbar was built out of aluminum scrap that we have and painted black to hide how old the metal was (old mangled remains of a boat-lift that got picked up and tossed during a storm).

To be completely honest a couple kayaks is hardly stressing the capacity of KB Voodoo's bed crossbard or the aluminum hitch bar that I built. I planned on building these so they're both reusable for other types of material and in the future I'll probably get a chance to stress it out with some loads of 2x4 wood or 2x4 steel tube for at trailer I'm going to try and build.

Ultimately I'll probably retire these crossbars from use for kayaks and move to a roof-rack (Probably Pr1nsu w/ J-hooks). I'll probably end up relegating these crossbars to use with a RTT in the bed or maybe a basket for carrying fragile gear and keeping it out of the lower section of the bed.

Very solid crossbars, and a real clean design. I definitely would recommend this to anyone looking to pick up a crossbar.

Noticed an interesting thing on the way back down from my trip this week. The force from the straps that I ran at the front and rear of the kayaks was enough to start to cave in the plastic side-cap underneath the bedrail. Looks like a set of steel rail-caps are in order soon (of the KB Voodoo flavor of course)... I swear they got 90% of this truck right but really skimped on the pieces that really should have been built tough.
