Toyota doesn't use mulitport for "cleaning," that's just a bonus.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
    While I agree the 3.4 (5vz-fe) and 4.0 (1gr-fe) are great, proven reliable and robust engines;

One can not simply forget the 3.slow (3vz-e) which was by every measure a POS.. barely enough nuts to drive, absolutely horrible reliability in comparison to ANY other toyota truck engine. And for icing on the cake its incredibly inefficient. .

The 3.0 was a hack job. The 22re-t was a fill the gap engine. In the mid 80's the other small truck manufacturers caught toyota with their panties down... They introduced V6 engines to their trucks and toyota was not even close to ready to put a v6 in their truck. 86 and 87 got the 22re turbo to fill the gap because it was easy.. 88 the rushed POS 3vz-e was introduced. . 95 the 5vz finally replaced it, with the updates it was the engine they should have built.

Fast forward to now and to me it looks like a similar situation. Toyota market share is threatened because they aren't ready with a new truck and they slap one together. Then they throw in some borrowed tech from other platforms and call it all new.

This could turn out to be the best Tacoma yet, or it could be the next big failure!

Just something I was thinking. .

The only truly effective way to clean them was to pull the intake manifold and use acetone or carb cleaner to soften the baked carbon, then scrape it off using a dentist's pick. It usually took 6-8 hours from start to finish. No thanks!!

I didn't think the 3.0 was unreliable. Underpowered, sure. The bad rap comes from the auto trans blowing up all the time.

Those had notoriously bad head gasket issues. Hell I think the recall ended not too long ago if it's still not going on.

Mine had 130k or so on it when it went

Not arguing. Ive heard of the motor being a dog. Heard of the trans blowing. Never heard of a blown gasket except the motor Brent rebuilt. Never really cared about the 3.0 beyond that :notsure:

Yes they did. My '95 Runner had the head gasket replaced before I bought it, and later on I had it compression checked, and I had a couple iffy cylinders. The engine was a dog on grades.

I'm going to sit back an laugh so hard if Toyota comes out with a completely different configuration than what has leaked. Watch 'em offer a Cummins with 1200 HP and 1700 ft/lbs....that gets 30 mpg's after you select the "Economy Mode" on the factory installed tuner....

    Watch it happen.

    I wasn't aware Cummins made a V6...

    :D

Looks like intakes might really help this engine compared to the naturally aspirated 4.0 L. I remember watching a youtube video not to long ago where a couple of jokers got 20 HP on a dyno out of an s2000 with an aftermarket dry filtered CAI. The guy who ran the dyno knew his shit and basically said the more baffles and hollows attached to the intake the more likely a CAI will streamline things and give some benefits. That is one big arse sound chamber to the left of the engine so I'm thinking that could mean CAI's will be helpful to this setup.

Yes, Cummins specializes in I6 Diesels. So do most Diesel truck engine manufacturers. The space requirements lengthwise aren't as tight so I6 makes sense in a heavy truck. The I6 is a less complex engine than a V8 while still being perfectly balanced.

IF Tacoma eventually gets a Diesel it will be an I4 from there own lineup overseas. You heard it here first :D.

I'm guessing that's why all of the rumors around Toyota using the Cummins and Ecoboost in the Tundra right when the new Tundra release happened ended up being untrue. I'm guessing Toyota looked into buy those powerplants for the Tundra and decided it was best for their business philosophy to rely on another manufacturers engines. They're probably right if that was the case.

    Hence the word "most".

There are supertankers with I3 engines. It all depends on how the system is mated up. The purpose will dictate the engine used. Hybrids can use the electric motor for torque and tend to use smaller engines if they are going for the best mpg.
