TL;DR: Absolute newb. How do/Should I buy a 2015 Tacoma? I will have a lot of dumb questions.

Poked around briefly, looking for info on the current climate on 2015 Tacoma purchases. What does the market look like in the next few months? With the new model coming out, with the GM competition, with the standard end of model year coming, does that soften the market?

Here is the scenario: I am not new to vehicle purchases. I will be purchasing a new vehicle in the next 30-90 days. I have narrowed it to three choices: a 2015 Tacoma, Colorado Canyon, or the wildcard choice Wrangler. Wrangler is probably out, so focusing on the pick ups at this point.

I am cost conscious. I do not want to pay for features and things I do not want or need. I do not need the latest model year.

If my read is correct, the Tacoma is far more affordable, especially considerning what I don't want or need. I have not been a GM truck fan in the past.

I am looking primarily at a PreRunner V6, with basically no options: maybe tow, maybe the CP package, maybe upgraded audio if I can figure out what I get for it. I specifically do not want SR or SR5. That makes em tough to find it seems.

    Thoughts?

welcome to the forum. Imo the release of the 2016 will have little impact on the 2015. They will always be a hot seller, just like the first gens still are. Comparing the tacoma to the canyon, I would go with the tacoma. You just cant beat their track record. Spending this kind of money on a new truck, you want something dependable, and they also hold their value incredibly well in case you ever sell in the future. Win Win

Skiergd, I agree with you on Toyota durability. I also question GM durability. Not a fan of first model years. the GM is hard to get "cheaply". My daily driver is a Toyota car with 165,000 on the ODO.

So, assuming I can get a Tacoma at fair value, it is probably my choice. I know it is very general, but off the lot is there room under INV for these. A couple %? If I am buying features I do not want, I am certainly not going to over pay for them.

maybe look at a 14 or 13 if you are not concerned with having the latest and greatest. Like others have said it doesn't matter when you buy a Tacoma or how you do it. the price is the price and that is about it. Try calling dealers in your area and of coarse see if you can get this best price.

Not sure I understand. I am not and would not buy a used Tacoma. There are 2 or 3 vehicles (IMO) that are clearly better to buy new - the Tacoma being one.

2015 is the current model year and the last of the second generation. I am not interested in a 2016.

The sense I am getting is :
    1) that the GM product and the generation close has had no effect on the 2015 market
    2) there is little discussion here on purchase experience of the 2015s.

Correct. buying a new Tacoma is the way to go if you can swing it. they hold there value so well that buying use saves you very little. I had a colordo and it was ok. I have also drove a brand new one....compared to the Tacoma I would again choose the tacoma

I had a b$&?ch of a time finding mine. The dealers tell you if you don't want it, the next guy will. Sadly they are right.
    1. Contact a local credit union or your bank and secure financing with the best rate you can find.
    2. Locate a few acceptable vehicles (color, package etc...)
(The pickier you are the more you pay)
    3. Try to reach the sales manager through the phone or email.
(Avoid the "pass the paper game)
    4. Have them remove all toyota accessories (floor mats, tube steps and other over-priced b.s.)
    5. Use costco car buying service or military services
    6. Negotiate the price for the truck only!
    7. If trading in, get the trade in value for your car (discuss negative equity if any)
    8. Do not pay sales tax on the value of your trade!!!
    9. Adjust your payment LAST by changing the down payment or number of payments.
    10. Walk away for the evening and sleep on it.
    11. Buy your truck!

I figured out what truck I wanted ahead of time and then contacted three different dealers in driving range from me and told them what I wanted. After I got those three prices I put them up against one another to see if any of them would negotiate a lower price. I did all my negotiating through email. Once I had the lowest price I could get from the three I called them and said I want the truck I'll be there such and such a time. The dealer that gave me the best deal didn't have the truck in stock but got it there within a day. Walked in looked at the truck, signed the papers and got out. No haggling back in forth in the sales office...

Sadly I paid almost sticker for my 2015 MGM DCSB Sport. This was the only one on the lot without the $700 side steps and with 4x4 and no TSS package. They wouldn't take the steps off of any other truck because people were buying like they had it. Couldn't justify 4k mark up for rims and tires. They barely had any 4x4's anyways but had a ton of PreRunners. They weren't in a rush to sell it and I was really considering buying a used low mile one ~20k but it was only 1-2k more just to buy a brand new one. This was in March or April when I got mine. They might be trying to get them out, but from my understanding, people are buying them up also because they don't like the new body style. So that's something to factor in also.

    Thanks for the input.

Point of clarification, I have purchased many many many vehicles, new and used. I was looking for the details specific to the Tacoma market, and these posts have been helpful. I had also found the thread referenced above. Frankly, I am a little surprised at the prices still commanded for this Truck ....

I will be back with updates as applicable.

Toyota does not do the $8000 rebate on a $43,000 truck. Instead they charge $36,000 and might wiggle on the last $1000. These trucks have a cult following. I know you want new, but a quick used search will show that these trucks command more than nada in the resale market. I didn't use that as a final decision maker, but residual value has to come into the equation. Used colorados aren't nearly as hot an item as used tacos. I was ready to go tundra, but the taco has a lower purchase price and a higher resale than a comparable tundra. Pretty scary really. Nissan has a decent truck for the money, but just pony up the cash and buy the taco, you won't be sorry

    jrod .......

Every post I have made indicates I know full well the fact that tacos retain their value...... it is why I said: " I am not and would not buy a used Tacoma. There are 2 or 3 vehicles (IMO) that are clearly better to buy new - the Tacoma being one".

I negotiate hard on auto purchases. I came here looking for some expert info on the climate of an interesting time in the Tacoma market: End of year PLUS End of model PLUS coinciding with recent splashy competition. My surprise is that I can not see any effect (YET) of those things effecting new market value.

I have, however, got the info I need from you and others! Thanks for all your time! It has been very helpful.

to be honest I went with 2013 trd off road. instead of buying 2015. I compared them side by side and the only real difference on the the two were the milage tacomas don't change very often same interior and exterior. even the 2016 seems like all it got was a nose job. so just because it says 2015 doesn't mean its better. my 13 trd is far better than a 15 stock

and I know what you mean but initial buying price and retaining value are two different things. eventually all cars in the same year range or generation balance out based on looks and mileage.

I guess I miss understood you question. I too deal very hard and generally pay cash for vehicles. When you ask how to buy I answered. I wasn't suggesting the purchase of a used vehicle, only suggesting that you plug resale and residual into the decision. A first year GM vs a 10yr toyota design also comes into this. $28,000 is a major investment for anyone, glad to see people doing their homework. Good luck and enjoy whatever you purchase. Life's too short to drive a lemon!

I Found the truck I wanted by test driving at my local dealership. I then located my color/model truck in nearby locations (I'm willing to travel a few hours). I then negotiated amongst the dealers by using their offers against each other. My suggestion that helped me out a lot was to start negotiating around the end of the month. I got a great deal by buying my truck on the very last day of the month. OP - good luck with your purchase.

Try COSTCO. They have a configurator and then will send you to a dealer. No haggle. Price was $500 below invoice.

    Update without a resolution yet.

Have pretty well settled on a DCSB 4x4 base. I have identified the target. If I can line the numbers up it will happen. Thanks again for all the input.
