Just toss the diesel in the Tacoma and call it good. As cool as it would be to get the HiLux, no need to reinvent the wheel.

So if you had to pay the SR5 V6 price, plus $5K for a Diesel option, you'd be in on that? Not making fun of you just asking.

Oh, and this is for @ForeRunner

Subaru tried to make a small truck. North America didn't like it. I thought it was neat. Would you go for something like this if it wasn't Dodge/Fiat:

The rumor mill has it coming here by 2017 if Fiat can get around the Chicken tax or decides to set up some manufacturing here. It is built off a Fiat chassis with a locking front differential. Not 4WD but it would get you most places. I could see small I4 turbo gassers getting +35 mpg in this tiny truck succeeding big time here. Hyundai has one coming too. Sounds like a loaded model will be just under $30K, base models in the 20's somewhere.

@Sterdog yeah, I remember. I have a hard time understanding some peoples thought process on it. I don't think anyone has test driven one so how can anyone say what's it'll be like.

I think one members thought process is well illustrated by their avatar. Stuck in the stone age

Not sure why people say Hilux drives different, maybe the vehicles they drove where bit up? If you get brand new Hilux out of dealership in Europe it drives exactly like my 2gen did when drove from dealer.
The only difference in vehicle drive ability is when you going over washed gravel roads with a lot of bumps on it. No frame flex on Hilux so it tends to send your teeth into chatter. Now if you load up Hilux, then it won't do that.

Dual VVTi would be nice option.
To me 2gen is pretty much Hilux minus frame.
I know you posted something about pricing so
    let me straighten that up
2015 Hilux Sr5 (Sr5 is the luxury version) 4x4 with 3.0 Diesel costs around $35 000+ with VAT, etc.

SR5 comes with ABS&VSC side curtains, bla bla bla and whole load of gizmos which I would not want anyway.
However, each comes with e-locker.... (One that does not brake on your way to mall)

Now thats $30+ with crazy VAT, Crazy luxury tax and few more crazy European taxes. If you could import that thing into US. you could get best Hilux version for Upper $20k...

So again, why we can not get Hilux which is cheaper, better and looks better than 2016 lifted Sienna powered by Chinese Highlander engine..

Base model Hilux is $27,100 USD in England and comes with the smaller older Diesel, not the new guy. The new one would be closer to the larger Diesel offered which starts in the $30k range. By the time you stick a few options on it you are at 25,550 GBP. That's $40K. Once the taxes and everything is applied it's near $50K for a truck that's the same as a TRD Sport Tacoma. If you don't believe me the price sheet can be found here:

    https://www.toyota.co.uk/new-cars/hilux/index.json#/iframe/https://www.toyota.co.uk/world-of-toyota/price-list.json

Bouncing around from the heavier frame is not the same drive, is it? I was just making the point that some of the guys who work overseas have said that the Hilux wasn't as nice a ride as the Tacoma. In the gulf the Tacoma is the luxury line and the Hilux is the line for work. Tacoma isn't targeted at the work hard, at least not like a 3/4 ton, market over here so that type of frame is unnecessarily stiff.

Let's be honest, when was the last time you heard of someone bending a Tacoma that wasn't jumped? The frame is right about where it needs to be and the new frame should be a bit lighter which is great for a bit more payload.

If anything I could see Toyota eventually throwing the Diesel in the Tacoma but only if the government gives them a clear out line of the emissions standard for the next 10 years and the consumer market for the Diesel Colorado is good. Never say never on the Diesel. For right now though I still don't think the 3.5 L will be any worse for driving around on or offroad than our current 4.0 L but will return better mpg. That's good enough for a gas job IMHO.

Hilux is built for a different market and built to different emission regulations. Some people just think the world revolves around them I guess...

"Should" be an upcharge from the base 4 banger not the V6, Ram can do it...don't see why Toyota can't. IIRC the Ram upcharge is $4000, will have to double check that.

Base model Tacoma 4WD is the B-Max, those msrp around $26K (I have seen them go for $22-23K)...$4-5000 is still reasonable, even if there is no discount.

Yup. If anything I see Toyota one day unifying the platform but still making modifications for the North American market. Similar to how the Colorado is only about 75% similar to it's foreign cousins IIRC.

Yeah I've always figured on 3-5K upcharge for the Diesel. Remember I'm from Canada so we pay about $5,500 for the Ecodiesel option. A little less if there are promotions for the Ecodiesel.

Too small, needs at least a 6' bed, the reasons an Outback or the Forester won't work for me, I tend to do a lot of back road exploring, the Suby runs out of capability real quick, where the Taco doesn't flinch, that and I like a traditional bed, separate form the passenger compartment...my bed is constantly being used, any thing from construction materials to moto and camping gear, bicycles, etc...the Tacoma 6' bed barely cuts it at times, but no reason to step to a fullsize tho'. Those micro trucks are mostly useless. Hell, Toyota used to offer a 7' bed with their mini trucks. That seemed about perfect for a hobbyist. You can put a dirt bike in straight and close the tailgate.

They still offer the long bed in the HiLux.

Just checked the Ram site, upcharge is $4200 here in the US. Base model RCLB puts it at just shy of $35K.

I have seen double cab ED tradesman on dealer lots go for $30K. RC's for a little less.

Depends where you look, in Mexico the HiLux where they sell them side by side it is waaay cheaper than the Taco...no diesel option, but gives you an idea to where to start from.
