Maybe I am all wrong and there is a mechanical engineer here that will point out my error. I don't believe the new smaller engines that have to run over 6 grand rpm to get more horsepower is realistic in the real world to tow and haul a load of gear. That is why I got a 2015 4.0 while I still can. I am an old school guy that grew up in the days of big block engines and a ton of torque. If I am wrong would somebody tell me how a 3.5 liter will out tow a bigger engine.

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
I discussed this earlier. A smaller engine can make up for displacement by increasing the detonation efficiency. Direct Injection technology greatly increases detonation efficiency, ie have a more complete burn and generate more power on each stroke. Half a litter isn't much to make up, I doubt there will be a huge difference between the 4.0 and 3.5.

You can also make up towing power through proper gearing, transmission and rear diff. With a 4.30 optional gear ratio and a new 6 speed auto, I have a feeling the 3.5 will put more torque to the ground that the 4.0 (comparing stock gears).

Also keep in mind that top end power, top end RPM's, etc... have little to do with low end torque these days. With variable timing advancements, the torque curve generally stays pretty flat.

A snout like the 2016 is showing doesn't impress me. I like sleek front ends, not hog nose. I already know I have a truck, I don't need everybody else to say, "Whoa jiminy, THAT'S a TRUCK."

To add, the smaller displacement decreases pumping losses due to surface area friction, thus also increasing performance.

Dash photos show a redline of 6k rpm. Just FYI.

I would wait and see before making any judgements. But good tech as others are pointing out can (potentially) make up for 0.5L

TFL did a tow test in the 15 and it ran at 5500rpm all the way up their test hill with a load.

My first degree is in mechanical engineer, back in the early 80's...

As we improve piston ring technologies to lower drag and increase oil sealing, and we stiffen our valve trains to reduce lash, float and mass, some of the barriers to high rpm's go away. By using the variable valve timing technology, we increase the engine's "sweet spot", where efficiency/torque is good. And if power is torque x RPM, it is easier to get more RPM than torque, since torque is related to piston diameter and stroke length. And then there is the tradeoff between bore and stoke...

And remember only 50 years ago, reliable high speed diesel technology was a pretty new field!

We will get high speed, efficient and long lasting gasoline motors...just look at some of the GP and motorcycle technology.

Toyota has beat the shit out of 6 -v6- 2016 tacos in Australia for 90 days or so .
Towing & high speed runs said to be going good.
Australia is also saying 265 fpt & 285 hp..

The same reason a Coyote 5.0 makes more power and more torque than the old Mustang 5.0 engines. Time and technology march on.

If those are the actual numbers, I see the new engine and transmission as an improvement.
