Excellent post, and about the same boat I'm in. Now that I own a house with a big shop, the entire family (mine and wife's) come over for oil changes. To help reduce the frequency of occasions under the hood, I signed up for the Amsoil Preferred Customer program so I can get the XL oil on the cheap and I'm currently going 7,500 miles on oil changes with plans to extend to 10,000.

Even a NEW member could use his fingers to try the search button instead of just for jerking off. Hey, how about looking at the owners manual-what novel thinking!

I use synthetic and change it at 10,000 miles. It's easier to just reset the maintenance required light and change it the next time it comes on. Last year, I had a used oil analysis done by Blackstone, the wear numbers were great and the oil still had plenty of life after 10K miles. They told me I could get another 2,000 miles out of the oil with my engine. I just stick with the 10K miles because it's easier to keep track of.
BTW, I was using Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 but I have recently started running Mobil 1 0W-40. I'll get another used oil analysis with the 0W-40 after 10,000 miles and I'll post the results.

The engineers of our engine know something about it I think the recommend is more then fine. I am pretty sure there is some guy on here with a 2nd gen v6 and does his every 5k and has over 400k miles on his engine without a hiccup.

    3yr and/or 3k was a great sales job by Jiffy-lube etc.
I've pulled samples of my oil to be tested by Blackstone labs on all of my vehicles.
We've switched to 10k or yearly for Dino and 20k or yearly for synthetic on all our cars that aren't under warranty (the Taco gets 5k to appease the warranty) - all oil samples still come back saying there is not a breakdown or contamination issue. Only time I've had contamination issues were when I ran a K&N air filter.
When opened up my '74 302, it didn't have any wear due to oiling issues. Two different F250 powerstrokes got into the 250k range before we sold them and were clean when we replaced the oil pumps for preventative maintenance. Two different Saturn SL models lasted until their gaskets gave out...
Bottom line - don't be afraid of longer change intervals. If you are worried, get your oil tested.

Tried to stay close to 3,000 miles on my '01 and '05 Tacomas (134,000 and 102,000 each, in under 5 years.

My 2010 is not getting driven as much, so at 5 1/2 years old, I only have 75,000 miles on it.

That all being said, I have not had an engine issue ever on all three of my TRD Tacomas.

The 2010 is getting its oil changed between 4,000 and 5,000 miles now, but was changing closer to 3,000 miles in the beginning. Dino oil that the dealership uses, always.

I am thinking of switching to Mobil 1, as I already had in the differentials and transfer case. Will synthetic oil give a noticeable increase in mileage? I get 15 city and 19 highway MPG.

In my opinion, no. The advantages of synthetic oil is mainly the fact that you don't need to change it as often and it is less volitile so you won't burn as much in a healthy engine. It also can help keep your engine cleaner. Most of the time though, a difference in fuel economy is barely noticable, if at all.

I don't pay for oil, as I'm still on toyotacare. Toyota recommends dino oil in their truck. Thats why america is great, free will and all...

Guys I can’t' thank you enough for your time replying to my post and alleviating my concerns, except you vtdog, yup except you. As you can imagine this very helpful forum can’t be the only forum I’m a member of since Al Gore invented the internet, whether it be forums on watch’s, fishing, compound bows. No matter what forum I’m in there’s always that guy, that one guy who gets cranky when someone posts a question with all that gaul not using the search feature. It’s as if he (that guy) thinks that a little elf reaches in to his pocket and takes out 10 bucks every time a duplicate post is posted instead of using that little wheel on the mouse to scroll by. Having written all that DoorDing you made me laugh with that underwear joke, well played Sir well played. In all seriousness guys THANK YOU again for taking the time to reply, it’s refreshing to know that people are still willing to help (that guy) this time being me, who is obsessive compulsive, and anal all wrapped up in one. I will wait for the 5,000 miles to have it changed. By the way, nobody else thinks the seatbelt pockets in the back seat are cool? Be well folks, and THANK YOU again I’m sure I’ll have more questions in the future.

That's what the manual in my '09 Taco says, 7,500 miles. I have dino and been getting it changed at 5,000 because that is part of my prepaid package with tire rotation. Our '12 Highlander has synthetic and recommended interval is 10k.

I bought my 2007 new. I did the 1st oil change at 5000 miles. Changed to Mobile 1 and have been changing at 10,000 mile intervals with a new filter every 5000. I'm now at 151,000 with zero oil consumption and figure the engine is still good for another 150,000 using the same technique. I do the same on all of my vehicles and have for years and based on my research 10,000 miles on synthetic is being conservative. The owners manuals on most vehicles recommend 7000+ even with dino oil.

I pay $23 for a 5 jug qt at Walmart and change my own. Dino oil is about $10 cheaper, but I'd have to change twice as often. I won't say synthetic protects better, but it lasts longer.

does turning tires to black wall out count? How bout added snug top rebel.
I've been following Gnyla's advice, his build is here. He's got 390,000 miles with no major repairs.

Mobil one filter M1-209, twice the capacity of factory filter, and Mobil one synthetic oil every 10,000 miles. Just like previous poster, I reset scheduled maintenance light once, then change the second time it comes on.

Yeah I wish my 2.7 had the filter located like the 4.0 does. Loved that about my 05 4Runner.

5,000 mile interval with Mobil 1 0w-20 and a Toyota filter is what I do.
