If you're gonna tow a lot, you don't have to really worry about the transmission overheating in a manual. I have a v6 6 speed 2015, and love it. I've never driven the auto though, so I can't really say how those are.

They are putting in an a new manual transmission for the 3rd gen. It should be a better transmission than the outgoing one.

I currently own a 6spd stick in my BMW so Auto for my future Tacoma will be welcomed. I love love love driving with manual but in a 4000lb truck it's not my cup of tea.

I'd prolly go with the auto. Probably will be the Aisin A760E/F the Tundra has had since 2010 mated to the 4.6L V8. From wikipedia

I go with the manual. Whatever configuration it comes in.

My new screen saver. Neither my wife nor my 18 year old daughter will drive automatic cars or trucks so the choices get more difficult every year. A real man's truck has 3 pedals. One for each leg.

My auto has 3 pedals, gas, brake, e-brake. Looks like I have a real man's truck. Yay for me!

Especially when referring to a fairly light duty pick up truck that drives like a car....

It ain't no Peterbilt...which I see women driving them from time to time...so. Some companies like women operators
because they are easier on equipment, they have nothing to prove. ;)

We own both a manual and an auto, I grab the manual more, because I like driving it better, one isn't better than the other, it is all personal preference. The wife prefers a manual too, when we buy our 3rd vehicle 99.9% chance it will be manual, keep the auto vehicle as a spare.

I'm getting a manual because I have an irrational hate of planetary gear sets.

However, I don't care what's in the transfercase.

Almost everything is going to auto, even the semi's. For one fuel economy is better with the auto's now, that and easier to learn on.

I tried renting a manual bobtail for when we moved, couldn't find one.

There will be a day when they eliminate driver input altogether. probably sooner than later. It is hard to get the younger generation interested in cars anymore, let alone driving a manual trans.

If your acceptable bench mark for a manual is quick shifting with very short throws (i.e. Japanese, European sports cars) get the slush box. However if you find autos boring get the manual. If you do get the manual pay the extra $400 and get the TRD quick shift upgrade, it's worth the money!

Manual has good points. You put it in 1st gear it stays in 1st gear. You put it in 2nd gear it stays in 2nd gear. The Tacoma A750 auto you put it in first gear it upshifts to second gear as it pleases.

I liked the Taco 6MT for about 1.5 years then bought a trailer and didn't like it, especially hauling the trailer offroad. A manual trans going offroad and trailering made for some nasty clutch burning smells, even in 4lo.

The solution was an '05 Tundra with the slick little "Shift-L" button that locks the A750F into 1st gear come hell or high water. Uphill, downhill the Shift-L button locks the Tundra A750 auto into 1st gear.

Why the Tacoma didn't get that slick little Shift-L button is beyond me, and why it still isn't available is a surprise. Seems like a simple thing instead of crawl control using VSC.

Why does mine bounce off the rev limiter when I put it in L? Or 2? Am I doing something wrong?

I do a fair amount of beach driving. Driving a manual on the beach can be done but it's a PITA. Glad I have the auto.

There are pluses and minuses to both the manual and automatic. Driving stick in Austin on I35 during rush hour is a real pos, I just like being involved in the driving experience. Meanwhile they are testing Google's "driverless" car in Austin, now that is an automatic, the thought makes me sick.

I thought the Gen 2 Tacoma A750 when it was in L it would shift up to 2 whether you wanted it to or not.

That would be nice. I think that is the A760. I was wondering if you can keep the auto locked into low gear no matter the speed. That's a nice feature to have and some autos don't have that.

If you put the auto in L it bounces to 2 when it gets to a rev limit? And if you put the auto in 2 it bounces to 3 when it gets to a rev limit?
