Gm builds junk because they sell a lot of cars in China. China sends us nothing but junk so GM is just returning the favor.

One should not worry about the company being American, one should worry about whether American workers benefit with jobs and salaries. The "company"' is just a bunch of overpaid executives. I will take a Tacoma any day, and Japanese made knives are some of the best on any market as well. Embrace the advantages of a global society. It took the Japanese to force Americans to actually produce better products - remember those 1980's American vehicles? Wow, now they were shite.

I've been driving for 40 years (yeah, I'm old)...and have had over a dozen new Chevy/GMC trucks. And a handful of Ford trucks. Currently on my 4th Toyota, 3rd Tacoma.

All were good trucks. Never a problem with any outside minor irritations.

As far as "imports" go...I believe my 10 thousand dollar Imported 1986 Toyota truck was a better truck, then my current 30 thousand dollar Mexican built with "70% N American parts" Japanese truck.

I always say the jobs are in the states for Toyota and honda. Then everyone cries that the profits go out of the country. The irony is that the profits are calculated after the Lear jets, lobster, fat cat bonuses, bribes, unions, screwing their employees out of retirement, closing other factories etc...
The GM government motors bailout just rewarded the bad decisions with a blank check from our children's pockets! We punished ford and other mfg's who we're running a good business by bailing out the losers. This was why I have parted ways with GM. I kept my '66 and then promptly switched to honda and toyota. Marysville ohio is a great thriving community thanks to honda. Lorain ohio is a crime riddled armpit thanks to ford leaving.

I'm retired after 33 years with a company that provided me a new car, or van every 70k miles or so. The last new vehicle I ever bought was a Ford 150 1983 custom van. It had its problems but I was able to deal with them. I was actually scared of high mileage cars, especially 4 cylinders until I bought my son his first car. The Honda Accord had over 110k and we sold it around 250k and only had routine maintence. I bought my middle son a used Honda Accord and my daughter a Mazda MX6 turbo. All gave me no trouble at all. I bought my first new vehicle since 1983 based on consumer reports and other info and wound up with my 2015 Tacoma TRD Sport. A lot of vehicles will last if you take good care of them but some will bite you bad in the wallet if you are not careful. I always had the most problems with used American cars. The new company provided cars were all American makes and I drove the hell out of them and never had any trouble. So you just gota do what you gota do.

Buying American only is a very 1950's way of thinking. Back then you could buy quality American goods at a fair price.

Where do you think the electronics and a lot of raw materials come from? Ever heard the phrase assembled in the USA with global materials? Tons of stuff is made there but finished elsewhere and they can then claim it's made where it's finished. All manufacturers do this.

Right on, though a lot of people still want to hang on to the myth of 'made in America' Your car isn't made in any one country period. It's assembled from parts all over the globe. Even Chrysler wordsmiths it now with "America's import".

That may be true per the discussion, but I believe they say that because most Americans like to buy imports and they need to compete.

Vehicles, electronics and clothes - those are hard to buy truly American, but there are tons of other things that we can still buy made right here in the USA using USA materials by truly American hands...........I think o_O Wait a minute. Hmmmmm.

I still don't see where the claim of parts for the Toyota that are made in the United States are sourced from China. I understand electronic circuitry would be a source of Chinese components. We would be talking less than 10% of vehicle parts sourced from China. If you do the research on the Tacoma it has 60% US parts content and 30% Japan. The Tundra is 75% US and 20% Japan. That leaves a 10% and a 5% for other countries. This is not a huge number of Chinese material.

Lastly, Toyota has a strict quality control number for each component for failure. In order to meet the requirement manufacturers of the parts have to meet the requirements. GM, Ford and Chrysler failure rates on components are higher, less strict on those brands.

(FYI) My 2003 Tacoma was built at the NUMMI plant in Fremont, California. The design was at Calty Research and Design Facility. The people who built the vehicle were UAW workers. The plant was in joint venture with General Motors as a partnership. As I remember the parts content on that truck was greater than 70% US content. That plant has since closed due to the downturn in 2008 and subsequent bankruptcy of GM.
