At 488 meters long and 600,000 tons fully loaded, the facility will be the largest floating object ever constructed. And now as the last of the topside modules now safely installed, the full scale of the project becomes clear.

Shell plans to moor the Prelude FLNG some 200 kilometers off western Australia at the Prelude gas field for 25 years, where it is expected to produce the equivalent of 110,000 BOE per day.

They must be going by overall length. The Pioneering Spirit has 30% more displacement and doesn't need tugs or anchor handlers to tow it around:

Wow thats a big ship. Im lucky to work on Nimitz class carriers. They are damn big. I could only imagine a ship long, wider, and taller. Ive gotten lost a couple times trying ot find spaces. I could only imagine a ship even bigger

I wonder if its propulsion plant will be powered by LNG. That would be the most amazing thing IMO

The Prelude (the Shell FLNG in the first post) uses steam for power generation. I'm fairly certain that it has no independent propulsion system and will need to be towed.

The Pioneering Spirit is diesel electric with 135,000hp worth of MAN generators. Wartsilia's seem to like throwing con-rods through the side of the engine. MAN seems to like turbos that grenade. Pick the mess you'd like to clean up :)
