Welders would not put my sliders on!

Went to a local welding shop today to get a quote to put my sliders on. They had a bunch of reasons not too. "It will void your warrenty", "It will ruin your frame", "Our insurance wont cover it". WHAT THE HELL? I don't care, just weld them on! DAMN IT! I got a buddy who can do them, but probably not for a few weeks and I want them on before the snow comes! Sorry guys, but I am sure you know how I am feeling at the moment. Got one more place to check out tomorrow.

 

that sucks they wouldnt weld them on. you'd figure...with the economy the way it is...................they would do it no questions asked. at least in the U.S. that is.

 

The warranty thing and the ruin the frame is bull. But their insurance is a valid concern.

If they are covered for doing work like that and they do...and then your truck lands on a slider smashes it off...they are in the lurch for it.

Best of luck finding another option.

 

If I ever did anything that f'd up the sliders, I would most likrly put the blam on myself not them. Oh well. This is why I hate living in a small town sometimes.

The reason that they won't weld on your frame is that it is really bad for your truck and frame. When you weld on a frame it can possibly warp the frame and cause alot of other issues. Plus if you decide to change them it will really warp the frame when they are cut off.

It is best to have mounting plates and bolt them on. Especially with sliders if they get messed up you will need to take the off to straighten them.

I cant see cutting them off screwing up the frame, but welding on new ones maybe. Since I don't off road that hard I cant see too many problems.

 

x2. i welded mine to the frame....and its fine. what can happen,as far as warping the frame..........if you have them welded on, and drive right off in the truck, it can warp,cause it hasnt had time to cool down.

 

You say that but it's a sue happy world we live in. Unless they could have you sign a liability waiver before performing the work I can see where they are coming from.

 

Ya I read that in another thread. Seeing as I live where I do, I will have to let them cool and put paint on them while still in the shop becuase of the weather we are getting into here.

 

Blah blah blah...MIGHT is a big word.

Cause your bolts MIGHT shear heads off. or they MIGHT strip and be a pain in the ass to remove, but loose at the same time. You might get something wedged in between your sleeves and the frame that'll cause rust that you can't see.

If the welder is careful and knows what they are doing you won't warp the frame. I don't forsee myself taking mine off (henve why they are welded)

 

if you can....prime them ahead of time, that way they wont rust up, and dont have to be painted immediately. i had to do that to mine because of time restrictions where i work.........i did it all after work, but i used shop equipment.

Is it not better to weld with clean metal? Or are you saying just to prime after cooling?

 

i primed mine before i welded them up.............but i taped up about 3 inches back on the legs, cause its easier to clean/paint that small of a portion of them than the whole thing.

 

Ok, gotcha. I got them all painted and ready to go with a little clean metal at the ends of the legs. All I will have to do is paint the new welds.

 

Yup...The place that welded mine on painted where they welded and a bit on each side....I still need to go back and recoat mine again.

 

Welding them on would take the integrity of the frame away, not warp anything. And even then it would be OK, it's not that much damage. I would bolt them on. That way if you do any damage you can unbolt and replace. If you weld them on and have to cut off then you have some more heating up and cooling off and makes it worse. Just my 2 cents.
