The unfortunate reality is that state camps are an economic sinkhole, along with bridges, schools, parks, and many other subjects that come up on budget proposals - all subjects that people don't want to pay for. Many people don't see the hefty costs of janitorial service, policing, maintenance (signs, roads, erosion, on and on), and septic services. An idea of what closing a park could save the state is listed here

The disco pass was a response to the recession in an effort to prevent park closures. Although the initial launch and regulations were really bad, the long term effect has been positive. It's saved a lot of parks from permanent closure, but is still falling short of what's needed (see more here). Just recently, there was talk about closing all state parks for a week - we could have gone all the way to Tahuya just to be shooed away. When things start closing, they have a habit of staying closed, too.

Overall, the cost of the pass is on par with the rest of the US, and I'm OK with the current rate. If you go to places like the east coast, all offroad parks are privatized and cost $50 or more per day. Some states might be limited to only one park, even.

Nice Mike! I know Peewee's friend took a bunch of pics/vids so excited to see those.

That was definitely a great day wheeling, wouldn't mind going back this summer

Most state funding was cut from state parks in 2011. To offset the losses that is when the Discover Pass was created. It's a small price to pay.

Hello! Ok i know people are excited to see some videos, I've asked my Friend/Passenger Matt Blank, and he says there's 60GB of raw video footage to edit down a bit, so unless you wanna mail him a flash drive so he can dump it on, hold your horses. In the meantime, He has posted pictures on his flickr account which can be viewed without an account HERE! Please enjoy! and yes, they are a little pic heavy of my truck, but hey, that's what you get when you have a personal photographer along for the ride ;)
    Thx

I'm not sure what PeeWee ran, but I typically use Avenza.
This time, I wanted to try Maplets. Unfortunately, it sucked a big one on this trip. Limited zoom, and more often than not, my marker was way off. That could be the map itself, so I'm not writing off the app yet.

He (my passenger) was running BackCountryNavigator Pro, available on the android store, there is a free version, but we were using the pro version, sadly it was also pretty much inadequate, didn't have any of the roads that we were traveling. the good news is that we now have a track of the route we took. I was running a Clinometer app on my phone, that was also mounted to the windshield and zeroed out on flat surface. we also had website PDF maps that we were referencing on our phones.
    hope that helps!

interesting discussion on GPS apps. I have been using OsmAnd for android and it's been pretty helpful. I think I just downloaded a WA topo map and been using that for about 2 years. I've used it every time I've been out with Brian.

We had a stock 1st gen and (i believe) a stock 2nd gen. Both did just fine. We stuck to sort of "forest service" difficulty roads and slightly harder. I know the 1st gen hit his side steps a couple times but didnt notice any damage at the time. Definitely doable stock!

I only hit my skids from going to fast and bouncing onto the skids. The only other damage (Davids) was just an accidental mistake and had nothing to do with the trail.

I was the "stock" 2nd gen, though i had offroad tires, no front mudflaps, no running side steps, and i have relocated my 7pin trailer electrical plug, because that would've definitely been ripped off. I also have a TRD offroad package, which means i have a rear locker, which i did have to use once, but it walked up and over the obstacle once engaged. I have a Double Cab Short Bed, you saying Limo leads me to believe you have a Double Cab Long Bed? i don't think we had any DCLBs along, and you may struggle on some of the "jeep" trails we were going through, weaving through the trees.
    Videos are still being edited.
