Glove Box Light Bulb

Alright, researching these forms it shows that my vehicle (and others on here) uses the #74 Bulb for the glove box light.

I ordered one and it doesn't fit. Come to find out after examining the blown bulb, it was labeled a number #27. Why would this be and where can I find this number bulb?

 

I bought a bag full on ebay, I put them in the glove box, ashtray, and behind the HVAC control panel (I may have to remove the leds from their original plastic base and put them in the old base that screws into the HVAC board for this - easy). Most of the ebay sellers have pictures, use them to compare to the old if you still have it (check the ashtray as they are the same). If you think you want to take them apart, make sure you get the plastic base with wires, opposed to the soldered to a tiny piece of circuit board type. You can tell the difference easily by the pics.

regardless there are tons of each type on ebay.

When I fill out the part that says to put in your vehicle to make sure it fits it tells me "This part is not compatible with 2000 Toyota Tacoma SR5 Extended Cab Pickup 2-Door 2.7L 2694CC l4 GAS DOHC Naturally Aspirated."

 

If I hazard guess its because the seller's search is looking at dashboard lights, I don't know what they are in your dash, but the ebay leds are probably not the same size as Tacoma dash bulbs (the one's behind the HVAC panel for mine were shaped differently too, but like I said, I was able to swap them with a little work). I suggest pulling out the burned one from the glove box or ash tray and comparing to the pics. They are hard to see in their sockets, just little nubs. The originals look like a glass grain of rice, but the base has the same flat shape with a single wire contact on each side as the ones in the pics (like a small Christmas tree bulb). In the end, as long as they are 12 volt (all the car LEDs are) and you can make contact, they will work. Whether they stay is the socket is the only real issue.

If you are new to messing with LEDs, you should know that many of them have to be connected correctly. i.e. unlike an incandescent bulb, they only light with current flowing in one direction. Practically speaking, this means if an LED doesn't work, pull it out and flip it around.

If you have lost the original bulbs, I humbly suggest its worth ~10 bucks to give them a shot. I am pretty sure they work. Notice that they come in different colors though. The ones I linked to were blue, I prefer the white.

 

Albinator, I just reread your original post and I think I misunderstood. The original bulb you pulled out was a #27 (I thought that was the one you received when purchasing a #74) i.e. got the wrong bulb.

I do not know what a #27 bulb is. Sorry to send you down the wrong path.

 

It's all good. It actually got me to look into the LED because it looks much better. I found the bulb at the Toyota dealership and it's a 74 and looks just like mine that burnt out. So I don't know how the one I received was a 74 if it looked different. Tell you what, I am not impressed with the new bulbs light...I'll check it out tonight to get a better look at it to see how bright it actually is.

I went with these, from VLEDS, which were a direct, plug & play replacement for the glove box and ash tray bulbs.

 

Just an FYI, you can get replacement bulbs at any auto parts store. I couldn't find the #74 that it specifies but I did find two types in store that looked identical to the bulb I removed. I purchased the 12505 Philips bulb. It looks like it might actually be a little bit brighter than the stock bulb. The package comes with two so you can do the ashtray and glovebox at the same time. Mine have the tendency to burn out at the same time. I don't use the ashtray bulb though so I'm not gonna replace it.
