PSA for speaker upgrade

Hello. I just replaced the stock door speakers with some 6.5" component speakers. For those who don't want to run wire, splice or cut any wires or make your own adapters and are not having much luck with Taco Tunes, I found these that work

Made putting in new speakers stupid easy - just a fyi.

 

Did you replace the tweeters as well? What brand speakers did you go with? How much better is the sound? Sorry for all the questions. Been considering doing this myself but not sure if it is worth doing unless upgrading with an amp.

 

I just replaced my factory speakers with Rockford fosgate prime speakers. better sound and didn't lose any bass.

I ordered those adapters and wire connectors today.
I went with 6x9 JBL gto fronts and the 6 1/2 JBL gto for the rear and I'm gonna run a Clarion xc1410 amp to them.

I intend on keeping my stock head unit so hopefully this will have the sound I'm after.
Both front and rear speakers have built in crossovers and the amp has filters as well. I should be able to dial it in nicely.

 

Actually I am trying something different right now - I removed the stock 6x9's and installed a pair of Kenwood KFC-P709P components. I left the factory tweeter in and connected. I installed the new tweeter in the sill panel (above the door panel) and the 6.5" where the 6x9 was. All of this running on a stock head unit.

At first the highs were real high, but I adjusted the settings in the head unit and right now they seem to be good. Honestly, some songs I noticed an improvement with the new speakers, but for the most part I have not noticed too much of a difference running off deck power. My plan is to order a 2 channel amp to run the door speakers and I hope at that point it will make a huge improvement. Lastly one thing I have noticed is that is the Taco appears to have more road noise than other cars I have had so I have to turn up the volume more, but again a amp should fix this along with sound deadening.

So to answer your question - my personal opinion is that you will most likely need a amp to get much better sound. I have read a lot of reviews where people used a set of jbl 6x9's off head unit power and loved it, but for me personally I will never be happy with just head unit power - I will always need more.

 

Replaced mine with Focal Access 690 and 650's with

$63 polk DB1001 1" silk/polymer composite dome tweeters (pair, black)

polk DB1001 tweeters for the top of the front door. Amazing sound..

the topic is speakers, but yes I have a alpine 300x4 and a JL audio 500/1 for my 2 CP108 subs. I use a pioneer AVH-P4400 head unit

I just got a Kenwood Excelon system about 2 weeks ago. I already have the Pioneer 5000NEX receiver in because my Sony one started bugging out. First, I got door speakers and noticed immediately that there was absolutely no bass unless I cranked the volume. I'm talking at least 50% on a receiver that's about twice as loud as my old one. It wasn't much of a bother to me because I play drums, but I didn't want to ride around on the verge of getting a noise citation all the time. I also record music so I'm very picky about how my speakers sound. It was very clear at very high volumes, about 75%, unlike my stock speakers, but I wanted to get some low end at lower volumes. I ordered a sub box for behind the back seats, got some 10s, and ran a 500W single channel amp to them. Sounds nice with the right balance, not muddy at all.

 

Where did you get the box and what brand of 10s do you have?

was the power output the same for both?

why didn't they play the same music for the tests?

why didn't they use a RTA and show the difference?

this is less scientific/believable than Ghost Hunters.

 

I just ordered a no brand box off of Amazon and I got Kenwood KFC-XW10. You can sometimes find these boxes with 10s already in them. I've seen some for around 200-250, depends on the speaker. For the install, you're going to have to beat down a lot of the hooks and pieces that stick out behind the seat to make it fit right. I also had to saw off the carseat hooks. If money is no concern, I suggest looking into a JL Audio box. You don't have to take out the storage behind the seat if you go that route.
