So my 2012 is getting close on warranty and I have the rear brake squeal
going real slow or rolling stops like at a fast food joint.

Is the TSB worth doing and will it fix it, or is there any difference in quality.

THey say it will take a day and they need to check if it is covered or falls under the TSB and could turn me away and charge me for #1 service fee to check problem #2 full brake job.

Kind if a catch 22 they can not and will not say anything without pulling it apart.

Pulling is apart risk screwing things up more, having the same thing happen as has been reported and so on.....

Is it better to let it go and just do them myself when needed or the sound gets too loud.
    any input?
    Thoughts?

I just has mine done last week. Took 90 minutes and I they replaced everything. They ordered the parts ahead of time since I was in a couple weeks before for an oil change. I took the mechanic for a ride around the block and he heard the squeak several times and didn't question it at all. I've not heard a sound from the rear brakes in a couple hundred mile since it was done.

For me it was worth an hour and a half of my time.

Does anyone know if the updated brake shoes work on a tacoma that did NOT have the TSB done or can they only work with the updated drum?

Your dealer sounds like a bunch of hardos. If it exhibits the characteristics of the TSB why go the route of potentially charging you? Seems kinda soft on their part.

As I mentioned here it appears to me the only thing really changed was the pad material.

Had mine done over a year ago. No more squeaks, and no problems since.

After mine started squeaking at 30000kms I found the TSB and spent a shit load of time arguing with my dealership that I qualify and got the work done at the 50000kms mark. less than 25000kms later the brand new "better" brakes started doing the exact same thing the originals did and are actually squeaking worse. My opinion is try it if its free and under warranty, if not spend some $$$ and buy proper parts and do it yourself cheaper.

Just picked mine up from the dealer. Have been arguing with them for 6 months now to have them do the TSB on the rear brakes (they squealed for about 12,000 miles now - at slow speed breaking).

First two times I took it in, they either told me that it was just dust and/or they couldn't duplicate it. This time, it was squealing as I pulled in to the service center and I made sure that the rep that came out heard it.

Picked it up today. Looks like they replaced the drums, shoes and gasket.

Tech also wrote down that he felt vibrations from the front when braking on road test (I knew is was there but it was super light so I was surprised he felt it). So they machined the front rotors too. Now I have no braking vibrations and no squeal from the back!

Had my 2011 done with 1300 miles on her. Squeal was obvious with light braking at very slow speed. People would stare when I went through the drive thru. Dealer replaced shoes, drums and gaskets. Also, your dealer is being a turd--I would notify corporate that the douchebag is threatening to charge you for checking to see if your vehicle qualifies for a TSB. Don't think corporate will appreciate the dealer's ABUSE of the process. Good luck.

Just found this thread. My 2012 with 35000 miles is doing this.

This is the verbiage from the TSB itself..

    APPLICABLE WARRANTY

    • This repair is covered under the Toyota Basic Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months

or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.

    • Warranty application is limited to occurrence of the specified condition described in this

    bulletin.

Does that mean I have to get this done before I hit 36000/3 years?

Pretty sure I hit 3 years already.

You can try but most likely they won't allow it since it starts from the in service date. Most likely since yours is a 2012, the in service date is 2011 depending on what time of the year is was purchased. That's what they pulled with my wife's Rav4 with a different TSB for it.

I had this done on my 2012 at 35,000 miles about 2 months ago without questions asked.

That's what I am scared of.

I hooked up with a dealer and will drop it off this afternoon, parts should arrive tomorrow and have it back by tomorrow. I gotta have it back by Saturday because I leave TDY sunday. :goingcrazy:

Took my truck in and dropped it off. In service date is 5/9/2012, so I am roughly two months over. Service manager is currently waiting to see if they'll grant a grace period. All parts are in and ready to go, just waiting on the go ahead.

Any chance of this extending to the 2013MY? Mine has started doing this within the last 1000 miles. Any other 13-15 having the issue yet?

Mine is having this issue as well. Will ask have the dealer look at when it comes time for them to do the oil change next month. Ill let you know what they say and if you could keep me up too on your end regarding what your dealer says.

Not sure. My bosses 2013 does the same thing also.

The TSB is attached. States only 2011-2012.
