So does anyone have a large wooded lot we can use for "bug out" training. I'm not talking hardcore training, basically just getting together with our gear (I'm rather limited with what I have at the moment) and seeing what works and what doesn't. Its one of those those things you don't know where your weakness in your gear lies without testing it out.

alright I'm looking for a good CB/PA system that isn't going to break the bank. I don't need all the bells and whistles, CB, PA, Weather would be nice. Looking for the whole setup to be under $100. Single antenna, bed mount.

may be hard to get a whole setup for under $100

keep antenna tuning in mind as well. unless you get a full length steel wip, you'll need a tuner ($15 on Amazon), or a radio with a built in tuner.

you can easily get a good radio with a built in tuner and weather for under $100, but the whole system is very unlikely.

most basic radio w/ Pa output: $40
    Tuner: $15
    Tunable antenna $30
light duty 18 foot coax with male ends pre-installed: $15
    bed mount: $20
Misc hardware, zip ties, ground wire, etc: $15
    Total: 145

if you go with a steel wip antenna you can probably cut $20 out of that total since you won't need a tuner and the antenna is a couple bucks less.

that's also excluding the PA setup.
    PA speaker: $25
    speaker mounting hardware: $5
    signal/power wire: $5
Headphone jack (will need to be soldered): $3

keep in mind this is using entry level equipment. you can get better radios, nicer/more durable antennas, heavy duty coax, etc.

I think there is a Jeep shop in Southern MD that wells CB/PA/antennas at cost. I'll have to dig up the name, I want a CB too.

No worries, I'm only using it for on the trails not trying to reach across the country so I'm good with cheaper lol. I have some of the hardware like zip ties, I have a CB tuner from Lusetaco, I COULD use my firestik ants if it came down to it, but not sure if I want to go that route or a whole new setup. The CB went with the truck to hide the panel I cut out lol

Well, if all you need is a radio for under $100, I'll recommend the one I'm currently using. I've had 4 or 5 different radios over the years, and I'm in love with this one.

I know you said you don't need the bells and whistles, but this one comes with everything you will ever need, including a built in tuner and weather. everything is adjustable and easy to use. very high quality, especially for the price.

also, if you already have a firestik, you might as well use it. unless there's something specific you don't like about it. could be that you just don't like the look.
I've had 5 different antennas. I keep coming back to the firestick, because everything else I've run, I've broken offroading.

I actually had the 680 lol thats funny! I liked it and thought about going back to it but doesn't have weather. Have you tried the 980? I like the blacked out look especially if I could run red for the screen color

my 18 coax starts under my driver seat and makes it to the tail gate with about a foot or two to spare.

haven't tried the 980. currently running the 880, which does have weather, and does have red. you can choose the color and the intensity/brightness. has an awesome day/night button that switches between two colors an d brightness settings. I have it on a bright blue for daytime, but blue is very harsh on your eyes at night, so all I have to do when it gets dark is hit the button, and it switches to a dim red/orange (orange is one of the easier colors on your eyes when it's dark, hence why tacomas, BMWs, and other car manufacturers use orange.)

I made it work when I had mine on the tailgate.
