Welds don't look that bad. I've seen worse, I just can't recall when or where.

 

I can grab onto those arms and wiggle the entire truck, so I figured that was strong enough to support a chainsaw...

I just got rid of my add-a-leaf and did a similar pack rebuild to what you did. Not that it is anything special, just a way for me to post in you thread so I get notifications on sweet chain saw attachments. My chain saw just bounces around in the bed.

 

Hey Brett if the bolts break off you can always drill threw the steel and run the bolts threw and weld the heads on the back side or cut the heads off and plug weld the bolts in place.
Sometimes the welds get in the way of where you want to mount to. Just my .02
Your welds don't look bad from my phone as long as it holds up to the abuse.

Be curious to see what kind of pack you came up with, still very happy with mine. And yeah, when I need the chainsaw on trails in the spring, I seem to be using it constantly. Got tired of it bouncing around the bed, and wanted something to do with what was left of the rotopax mount.

Bolts aren't going anywhere. I used a grinder to make a slot in the ends of that 3/16 steel, slid the bolts in the slot with the head towards the back, and the bolts are welded on the head, and then I filled in the outside edge of the slot. The shitty welds are those side support pieces, but I'm still pretty confident in them. Version 2.0 will have that capturing plate on a hinge with some sort of cam latch (thinking of stealing one off an old bike seat) for quick removal of the saw as opposed to the wingnuts.

Tested it out again today, including a fair bit of times removing the chainsaw, and it didn't go anywhere.

My 750lb latch lost the will to live this past weekend. So I've been driving around with a strap holding the swingout shut. It was the one part of my rear bumper that always felt lacking. That latch was just plain shitty.

I've wanted to improve the latch setup for a while, but I'm not in a great position to tear into it right now and redesign it. So I ended up just welding up a 2,000lb latch in the same configuration and it actually feels really good. There's no vertical movement in the swingout that I experienced with the old latch. My 110v HF welds were OK, I really don't think it's going anywhere.




Also, ordered myself a couple week early birthday present in the form of a Viair 400H. Will be attempting to mount in where the ABS pump would be if I had ABS. Moving up in the world from the MV-50 as I believe I finally did it in.

Compressor mounted. Was a bit of a tight fit. Had to move the cruise control down to the next hold. Also, couldn't make the fittings work for the remote air filter, so the filter is mounted to the compressor, and right up against the firewall. Will have to unbolt it if I want to change/clean the filter, but not a huge problem.

 

Yeah the remote filter thing was kind weird on mine too. So it still on the compressor but I can unscrew mine to clean.

 

Sweet! I was going to go with a Vair if I didn't luck out on the free ARB one. Seem pretty solid on just the fender? Mine flexes a bit if I crank on it, but shouldn't go anywhere, the 400 looks to be quite a bit larger than the ARB I have though.

Glad you got the latch fixed, did it break off/open while driving?

Seems quite solid. I don't think it's going anywhere. I tried wiggling it as much as I could, and besides the little bit of give in the rubber mounts, I'm just wiggling the whole truck.

Luckily didn't break while driving. That wiggly rivet just gave out, looked terrible when I saw what was left of it. I'm probably very lucky it didn't break while driving. New latch is still holding up good, might let you lay a bead on it though for reassurance next time I'm down.

 

Doing a pretty good job at getting out as much as possible this summer.

Super happy with my last work on the truck. Wasn't rubbing tires at all and that was about as stuffed as it gets. Then aired up all 4 tires from 15 to 30psi in like 5 or 6 minutes with the new compressor. Excited for the rest of the summer!

I'd be going crazy! Winter is for working on trucks. The good trails are just opening up around here, and it'll be snowing in two months or so!
