I have been a Ford man my whole life (I'm 46) but just went out on a limb and bought a 1st Generation Tacoma for my son. He turns 16 in a few weeks. It's an '01 with 140,000 miles. We have only had it a week, but its growing on me already. Its so much easier to negotiate parking spaces and seems to be better on the petrol consumption. Anyway, here are a few pics. Let me know if there is anything to look out for. I appreciate it. Kevin.

beautiful truck. One of my favourite tacoma styles and colour.

    BEWARE THE FRAME RUST!!

The only thing that kills Tacomas is frame rust, and in your locale I would think it may be an issue. If it looks pretty good under there spray everything with FluidFilm and reapply every 6-12 months. If it looks rusty you may want to get some of it cleaned up before coating it with any kind of anti-rust spray.

Trust me I was 16 when I got my 04. Double cab just like that one. Still love it like the day I got it. And it can take abuse from "teenage adventures"

    Not that I'm advising it....

Wow, thank you everyone for the nice words!!! I had an '01 F-150 Super Crew King Ranch that I gave my daughter (that stung), but I did it to avoid any payments 2 years ago. Now however, my son is turning 16 and I didnt have another truck to give him so I had to buy one. They wanted 10,980, but after a few weeks they re-listed it for 9999. I offered them 9000 and after a little fussing they accepted.

    We have already:

Buffed out the paint and waxed it
    Changed the oil and filter
Changed out 2 of the 4 weather stripping on the doors (you can still see the back doors are crappy looking)
Changed the spark plugs and wires
    Got rid of the DRL
Buffed out the faded headlight lenses
Cleaned and partial detailed the engine compartment
Added the nerf bars from my brothers '01 4x4 (they were a gift to my son from him)

    Next is:

    Change fuel Filter
    Change fluid in tranny
    Finish the weather striping
    Tint the windows

Im really happy with the way its turning out. I never thought I would ever own a Toyota but its really growing on me. And yes, I will be driving it every chance I get :)

Sweet truck! It's my trucks twin! Aha. Great truck for a 16 year old for sure. I got mine when I was 19 and its treated me well so far. No issues at all. And agreed, do not let him find this website

Thank you guys for the kind words. Im thinking it would be a great truck for me too, not just a 16 year old :). We drove it tonight up to Smoky Bones and what a nice little truck. Its very smooth and quiet in the cab and just drives great.

BTW, this site is where I got the initiative to change the weather stripping and do the DRL mod, so I've been reading on here for a week now. Ya'll have done a super job! Kevin.

I'm looking for some nerf bars for my 04 double cab. Did the installation of those nerf bars require drilling, or was it a bolt on?

No sir, no drilling. They bolted right up, no issues at all. Kevin.
