Why that remote starter?

I also have the Viper ( 5301 - for my manual tranny )

Go with the two way .....I like to know that it's in range....and it has started.

Best Buy was near .....and did a good job.

 

Bumping this thread... Anyone get a remote starter lately? Any new recommendations?

 

Any new remote starter recommendations? I like the thought of the AutoCommand and using the factory remote.

 

I Posted that over two years ago and am still using my Viper 5901.
After 2+ years I am still pretty happy with it and would buy it again. I have no idea about the pricing anymore but I didn't think it was that bad when I bought it.

It has saved me a few times, the two way feature. I was hit in a parking lot while I was inside having lunch once. My key chain went off and told me that there was something going on, "Shock" warning I think but I forgot what exactly it said. But I got up and went outside in time to watch some lady trying to pull away after she sideswiped my truck. I got her for a hit and run and the truck fixed. The other time was some kids jumping up and down in my bed set it off.

I would buy again, still don't like the key chain material but it's held up even thought it looks like it's gone though hell. I would look into the pricing of the cell phone app/feature that let's me go though my phone if I were to do it again

Posted from over two years ago.....I have the Viper 5901, no problems with it so far. I did want the color LCD model but couldn't justify the extra 150 for it. If you have it installed some where watch out for all the extras that you might need. Best buy tried to almost double my price for a key module or some extras that were not included.

I don't know if it works from a mile away like they advertise but it goes really far. Also the two way lets you know if it's going off or if someone hit you. I don't like the material of the key chain housing though, it's a silver paint that's already scratching off after three months. And you have to charge this one, I get about a month before it lets me know it's about to die. Just a simple mini USB plug.

There is one thing about the Viper 5901 that I didn't mention that I don't like but I bet is the same with most systems. With the factory key-less remote if you hit unlock just once it only opens the driver door, then twice for the rest of the doors. I installed the electric Pop & Lock and wired it to the passenger door but because of the Viper it always opens/closes with the alarm. It's a stupid little annoyance but just wanted to throw it out there.**

I've had this system for 6 years now and it has a range of 1 mile. I tested it at a park and not only saw the lights turn on, but also get the engine on signal (duh...two way). It has adjustments for how long you want the engine to run, you can see what the temperature is inside the truck, it's rechargeable, has way more features than you'll ever use. Unlocks all doors with one push or just the drivers side. Programmable remote. Comes with alarm and kill switch as most come standard. I'm notified of what kind of alarm it is. Can be used on manual transmissions.
Just like the response above...I have to recharge mine about once every 1.5 months (even after all these years). Aren't all these made by DEI? sounds like the same product in the end....just different names! lol

 

Viper 5806V with Smart Start. DEI is the biggest, oldest car security company...they know what they are doing and I installed their products professionally for years with no problems.

This is the exact kit I'm going to use. I've seen it on a few different cars and its a well built kit with lots of options.

 

Can anybody tell me if the factory anti-theft still works, when the remote start feature is not active?

I understand remote start systems have to bypass the chipped key requirement, but could someone use a key from a hide-a-key and take the truck when the system is not active? Obviously, they could when the engine is running on the remote start, unless the system senses door open or movement and then kills the engine. Thought?

 

Those types of bypasses are old school technology. The newer units don't require a key to be left in the vehicle.

Most systems will kill the engine if/when the brake pedal is pushed, plus the steering wheel will still be locked.

I know the ones you are referring to, but the remote starters I've been looking addy don't require a key left in the vehicle. The key I was referring to, is a hide-a-key without the agri theft chip. It's simply meant to unlock the dir if I lock my keys inside. The video I watched about installing one's remote starter indicated the middle learns the code, so it can start the truck without the key. This seems to be a theft concern if it totally eliminates the bed fire the chipped key. I understand if the truck is running, and the brake is pressed, the engine will die, but I can't tell if when the remote start is not active, is the chipped key security still bypassed. I couldn't find any mention in documentation fire several kits.

 

The remote start activates the bypass module so unless they can activate the remote start or wire up the bypass, the immobilizer will still be fully functional. With enough time in your vehicle a skilled thief can do anything, but to answer your question, no. The immobilizer isn't bypassed/disabled unless you activate the remote start(or insert the proper key).

 

To add to that, *if* you activate the remote start and someone inserts a non-chipped door-only key into the ignition WHILE the engine is running they can turn the key to run and drive off. Some systems might have a disable function to prevent this super extremely rare event from occurring, but mine doesn't.

 

Thanks for the clarification. The main one I looked at, would kill the engine when the brake was pressed, so it should be ok then.

 

If it's like mine, it will kill the engine if the brake is pressed UNLESS the ignition is turned to the run position.

 

What if the remote start is active and you turn the ignition lock with a non-chipped key, does it stay running? Maybe you've never tried it, but I'm curious.

 

Yes it stays running. The immobilizer doesn't do anything after the initial start. I played around with it for a few days lol.

Are you installing it yourself? As far as the immobilizer goes I highly suggest the Fortin key override all". It's much less invasive, hooks up with 4 wires and programs instantly.

 

I want to install it myself, I've always hated how installers take shortcuts. I'll look into the one you mentioned. Other than Cooper, I don't know any of the names, but read they are mostly all made by the same company.

 

I just rewired my whole system because it wasn't as nice as I wanted it to be. I wanted to get it working and know what I need/don't need before I made it "permanent". I took the time to de-pin unused wires in the harness that I knew weren't used. I know I could have just bundled them up, but Id rather just not have unused wires hanging around.
