17.9 average on 35's after calculating the difference. :D Pretty much all 45-55mph driving and taking off the line at a ridiculously slow rate. The key is to never touch 2K rpms and you'll be surprised what you can get out of it. Running 3.73's so that helps.

highway Mountainous areas, 4-8k elevation running 75-90mpg - 16.4mpg average
highway flatter sealevel to 2k elevation, 75-90mph - 18mpg average
highway flatter sealevel to 2k elevation, 55-65mph - 20.5mpg average
    mixed city and highway mostly <55mph @ 6k elevation - 16mpg average

all hand calculated with correction factor (speedometer, and thereby odometer, is 3.2% off)

    Mpg's are in my signature.

I tow things often and don't really care what i get for gas mileage. This tends to let my lead foot feel free to do its duty...

Speedometer and odometer are not off by equal amounts.

    Um??
Please explain as that goes against 35yrs of wrenching on vehicles

And would really make the outcome interesting of driving a known 10mile stretch to calibrate and always having both off by same amounts...

    edit:
Just spent way too long running multiple calculations at multiple tire sizes and speeds just to see if I'd been operating on a myth all these years.
Answer - its not a myth. For every % difference in tire size (ie circumference) there is an equal difference in distance traveled and mph. Speedometer and odometer do track equally unless they are using two different inputs (ie gps speedo with driveshaft driven odometer) - or if there is an issue in the speedometer pickup or needle driver (stepper motor or analog driver) that varies as a function of frequency.

So the other day I was driving through a school zone. It has a radar detector the city/police permanently installed to remind folks to drive 25 mph. When my speedo showed 25mph the sign said I was doing 23mph. I then used the GPS on my phone and a Speedo GPS app I downloaded to check my speeds doing 55-70mph. Granted GPS will fluctuate. But I was anywhere from 1 - 1.8mph different on my GPS versus the speedo on the truck.

Here is the stark reality though. Speedometers are not absolutely calibrated to begin with. When I was an LEO our patrol vehicles actually had a label on them declaring them to be "Certified Calibrated". Thus we could use our speedo to "pace" someone to determine their speed and thus testify in court it was accurate. Though I preferred to use laser instead. ;)

Now according to the calculator here at Tacoma World my tire change from 245/75/16 to 265/70/16 causes a -2.98 (-0.5%) change in revolutions per mile. Thus it says a speedo reading of 25mph would actually be 25.11 mph. Then 65 mph turns into 65.29 mph. Pretty dang negligible.

So the real question in my mind is how accurate is our speedo and odo to begin with?

Curious how you would calculate the difference in the odo?

LOL Just wait until we start hearing the 3rd gen folks bragging about 25 mpg or whatever they end up getting.

I get around 17-18. Drive hilly and curvy mountain roads everyday 15 miles each way to and from work. I could probably get a little better but i tend to have a little bit of a lead foot and can't stand to be behind people that don't do the speed limit.

My speedometer reads about 7% off with the stock tires, but it is only 1.5% off on the odometer.

Just filled up my tank Saturday night. 19.9 mpg on 12.5 gallons. And that is after idling at Burger King for literally 20 minutes. Slowest drive thru ever!

I typically fill up at the quarter tank mark.

My previous fill was 20.1 mpg.

I've noticed that since installing my Spintech muffler I'm driving more efficiently than ever. I think being able to hear the exhaust in the cab (and preferring the lower sound of low RPM) is contributing to improved fuel economy.

I was like you, and didn't imagine how they could be different, but they are!

    1) Toyota intentionally makes the speedometer read faster than you are truly driving. Get a GPS and see... If you drive to 65 mph on the GPS, the speedometer will show you're going 67! It's so people don't bitch to Toyota for getting speeding tickets, I imagine?

    2) The odometer is on a different gear (it would seem) because it reads true (for accurately showing miles traveled).
    -------------- -------------- --------------- -----------------
    3) When you go to a taller tire, 1" taller in my case (265/70-16 to 265/75-16), the speedometer finally is accurate, with speed and the GPS reading the same!

    4) However, now the odometer reads slow. In Arizona, where they have mileposts on long sections of freeway, for every 4 miles I was 1/10 slow... every 40 miles the odometer reads 39 miles... thus every 400 miles it reads 390 miles. The odometer is now 2.5% slow and the speedometer is spot on.

Conclusion, the Tacoma has separate gears for the speedometer and odometer... or there is some electrical gizmo that digitally changes them?

10-11. That's driving slow, and staying out of boost. I do drive a lot of city and hills so it doesn't help.

Oh, and my gas mileage on long trips without any cargo, staying in the 65-75 range: 20 mpg highway.
With cargo, it drops to 17-18 on California gas, 18-19 on Mexican (ethanol free) gas.
Around town, daily driving, some highway too, it drops to 15-16.
Lot's of in town driving, 14-15.

Putting a 3" OME lift on my truck in a couple weeks. Curious to see what it does to my MPG. No changes to rims or tires planned.
