Spray on bedliner? By who? Hows it holding up?
Haha my taco is silver. Ive never seen color matched grill surround on a silver taco. Howd you black yours out?

Sorry for all the questions. Just want this to be good

You can buy a color matched grill surround for any 2nd gen Tacoma. Some have had their chrome surround painted.

Did a billet 'chrome' grill with black Plasti-dip two years ago, still looks great, no issues whatsoever.

Just scuff up the chrome pretty well, use adhesion promoter/automotive primer, then hit with a good coating of Duplicolor followed by good automotive clear coat (with a good wet sanding between coats).

I did this a while ago and never looked back.

Sounds simple enough. How long did it take you?

Imo opinion (and trust me I'm probably wrong) I would not sand it, rather just make sure it's clean and dry then spray with primer sealer, let dry and paint body color. Keep sandpaper the f out of it; you want a smooth surface and you're pretty much already looking at it.

1 day for prep/paint, then I let it dry overnight before re-installing.

Prep took a little while just cause I was OCD about masking the center/outer triangles, as well as getting as much chrome off as possible (paint won't stick to the stuff).

I allowed 15 min between coats of paint, then about an hour or so between the final paint and initial clear coat. Just remember to wet sand with 2000 (I think that's what I used?) grit sandpaper before the final coats of paint and clear coat.

You can buy a factory painted grill for under 200 bux. Then sell the chrome one for about half that

Seems like a no brainier to me :notsure:

Yes, remove the grille; it ain't that difficult. Clean and dry it thoroughly. Prime seal it. Let it dry. Paint it. Let it dry before handling. $20 and part of an afternoon. Maybe a month or so down the line, remove the grille and clear coat it after it has cured, I guess.

If you're going to paint the chrome, you will need to sand it off, as the paint won't stick to it. A lot of body shops don't like to even touch chrome to be painted, that's how poorly it sticks. Wet sanding the next to final coat allows any of the little imperfections to get out. Wet sanding with an extremely fine grit won't have the same effect as dry sanding. There's a write up I followed somewhere here, I'll see if I can find it again.
