New to this forum, have tried searching but have not found what I am looking for or maybe I am not typing in the right thing. That being said, I have a 2014 tacoma 4.0 automatic trd offroad 4 door. I put a 3 inch lift and 285's on it and killed the power and gas mileage. So overcome power issues I installed a tonneau cover to help with aerodynamics, a banks 3 inch exhaust which sounded horibble untill i added a 3 inch magnaflow muffler. The final piece was a trd supercharger. I purchased this truck brand new 9 months ago, and plan on keeping it for quite a while. My last tacoma was a 1997 2.4 4x4 5spd that made it 360,000 miles.

Getting to the issue I am having. If I go full throttle from a dead stop the truck is pulling power to fight wheel spin. I have played with the traction control button, even holding it 5 seconds but I can tell that much if any difference. THe truck really seams to be holding back the power. So I went and purchased new wheels, 20s that are very light weight and 285/5- 20 mt tires to help out on the gearing. These are 1.5 inches shorter than the 285 16s I had.

Is there anyway to completely turn off or disable what I am assuming is traction control. I have read of others saying there tacomas with superchargers will spin into 2nd gear. I dont care about spinning but I am leaving a lot of low end power on the table.

Wheel/tire weight is critical. Did you put on ultra heavy E-load 1 ton truck tires on your light truck? If so you killed your trucks power and fuel economy.
Look up the weight of your tires on tirerack.com.

I have a supercharger, with 265/70/R17 bfg ko2s in C load which weigh 45lbs (lightest available) and I have a very difficult time not accidentally leaving ruber stripes on the street when I get on it.

My tires are pretty light. I installed factory tires and same thing. I dont know if your truck is a 4x4 or prerunner. But it most definately is a electronic issue. Didnt know if there was a way to change or cure it

First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
It's not the tires... I've got an 07 with an SC and have a ton of heavy stuff on it (fiberglass shell, winch, 1/8in plate steel bumpers, etc), including heavy E-rate tires (BFG TA KO 265/75 R16). My truck has plenty of power and can spin rubber off the line no problems. The power is almost too much at times. Fortunately my year is before al the new electronics (traction control, DSP, etc).

My guess is it is the electronics systems interfering.

I had bfg 285 75 16s. When i purchased my 20s and 285 50 20s they were 10 lbs less each. The bfg allterraims were so heavy if you hit a pothole or bump it would jerk the steering wheel.

So how long did it take you sc guys before your truck learned the supercharger. Once picked up from dealership truck was week. After 200 miles it felt better. But dealership actually installed a paper filter in it. I installed trd filter and it feels better. But still having power loss issues.

Anyone know if custom tuning can disable traction control

Be sure your traction control is fully disabled. To do this you must first be at a complete stop. Press the traction control button once. You will see various warning lights come on. In this mode your traction control is disabled but will come back on at 20 MPH. Press and hold the traction control button again until more yellow lights come on (5-15 seconds). Now your traction control is off.

That said I have issues getting my truck to spin on asphalt but I blame that on the automatic transmission.

I too have been interested in a custom tune or the BullyDog programmer because to be honest I have felt the supercharger to be a little underwhelming over all. But from my research I have not found any programmer that can disable the traction control system.

Ps sorry for the lame descriptions of the dash lights I will post pictures in a bit.

Tekcru i had turned of traction control before, i thought, but i had never done it at a complete stop. That made a huge difference. Thanks for the breaking down for me.

I just wish there was a way to tune it or disable it

Yup you must press and hold it.

Also tuners dont do shit... your only real option was the URD maf calibrator, but they dont make them for the newer trucks.

Okay, I suppose that makes sense. Was the same wheel not available in a smaller size? The problem was the tires, not the wheels. If you went to a lighter tire you could have also went to a lighter wheel of same diameter for even less weight, no?
How does launching in 4wd mean more power and why not do this every time?

Chopper I am sure i could of purchased smaller wheels for less weight, but these are se i liked. But also being lighter it was best of both worlds for me.

I have two mustangs at the moment. I have had 13 of them. They were so easy to get custom tunes. I just wish the toyotas could be as easy.

Not really trying to make it fast, just trying to make it run the way it should. The tacoma is weak compared to the new colorado with 305 hp. The trucks power was low and the mileage was not that great. I would hate to have a tacoma without the sc now. Even with the sc power is marginal at best

Go drive a new colorado and get back to me. Thing needs to be wound out to redline to make power.... it has NO LOW END.... peak HP numbers mean NOTHING IMO. The whole picture does... thats why the 1GR still shines, its super broad torque curve and power band make you have a bunch more usable power.

The Colorado has a car engine and also weighs more than the Tacoma. A real truck engine will put down higher torque numbers than HP numbers because that is what is what is usable to haul. You do not want to rev excessively for power in a pickup like you would a sports car.

If I recall correctly the 0-60 times of the 300+ hp Colorado and the 236hp Tacoma are about the same.
