Awesome spot Crom. Did you have to do a small hike into that site? I don't see the truck anywhere.

About 20 paces. I carried almost everything. It was worth it though. Best camp site I've ever had. Met some nice folks during the day time too.

Crom those are some beautiful pictures and one of the best looking campsites I have seen up there. The eastern Sierra's are full of gems like that, one just needs to spend the time exploring to find them. Thanks for sharing with us.

    Just the basics
Crom that spot looks like a winner!
What are you using for a camp kitchen? Yellow tool box?
Also are you using an EZup? Those are quite heavy, smd3 above shows an REI Alcove which I can attest is a fine product and has survived on many trips to Saline Valley and elsewhere. And I do mean survived during wind and rain storms in the desert. Easy to pack and lighter than an EZup.

Real men just call it camping
Interesting. I'm looking to buy a sun shelter soon, and now I'll be looking a little harder at REI's Alcove.

Not sure if you realize it or not, but that giant wild mushroom is edible and probably worth about $15 - $20 a pound. It's called chicken of the woods, and it's one of the safest mushrooms to eat as it doesn't have any poisonous look-a-likes. Just Google "Chicken of the Woods".

The only thing that could make that mushroom in-edible is if it were growing on a dead pine tree, usually they are found on dead hard-woods like oak though and considered a delicacy. You only harvest the outside edges that are tender, the deeper in you go the more woody it gets. When prime for picking it should be moist and have some clear liquid come out if you squeeze it, that last pic looks like it's in excellent shape for eating.

Thanks. All family members were quite happy. :)

Yes, click picture to see comments in my build thread about it.

Yes. For base camping I pack a 50lb-10x10-camo-slant leg canopy. I bought it over 10 years ago for $80 and it is awesome. It's true, it is HEAVY, but it is built really well, blocks 100% of sunlight, doesn't need to be staked out--unless heavy wind, and I can move it around myself as the sun light angle changes. During transit it goes on my roof rack above the cab. I use a pair of ratchet straps to hold it down. :)

Would Love to have a campfire.... Our forests have been so dry for so long we have been under a fire ban for over a month.

It's to the point now that some of the local FSR (forest service roads) have the gates locked and guarded to prevent people from going into the woods and accidentally starting a forest fire.

We went camping last weekend and the FSR road was open (8am-8pm) but we had to check in with the guard at the front gate of the road tell him where we were planning on going, and to make sure we were staying in a designated camping area. Which now had a full-time host that we had to check in with when arriving.

A friend of mine went up the same road the week before didn't feel it was necessary to go to a designated camp-site the front gate person had taken his license plate and mailed him a ticket for $275.00 for not adhering to the rules.

Not sure if it is just weird lighting or some sort of photo glare but it looks like the trees are on fire in the background lol.

There is a fire ban in effect here so I've put camping on hold until that is over with :pout:
