So Toyota is wussing out on the Engine, dang it. 270HP but add gearing

People blindy assume that displacement means EVERYTHING for torque... when it doesn't... especially against an engine that is over 10 years old.

 

But Sterdog, red plus green equals 7 & and my grandfather told me apricots, therefore random unsubstantiated opinion.

 

Both being equally fit who would you want you to help move that piano? A 110 lb woman or a 200 lb man.

 

If the 110lb girl is a power lifter and can lift more I'd take her over some 200lb lard ass man.

Apparently torque numbers are in. 270 hp and 261 Ft/lb. Check out the trd off road spec sheet that was posted in the 3rd gen forum

 

How long until CarandDriver picks up on these numbers?

If true, it's less than I wish for, but probably all that I need. I am interested to see the torque curve (I wonder if it makes the "high" rpm for max torque a meaningless number). Also curious about mpg.

 

Yeah, the curve is what matters. Still, this engine is a bit disappointing on paper. Maybe with the gearing and the mpg it won't matter.

Ridgeline sucks more with even less power and the Colorado is heavier which likely evens the field until Nissan revamps the Frontier. This Tacoma will do fine and that torque number is about where I thought it'd be but I was hoping for a lower rpm to get that torque.

 

I was hoping for 300HP and about 275 torque.

You are right I don't, just hoping some would explain how an small motor can out pull a much bigger one.

 

Because displacement doesn't equal power to the wheels or even HP/Torque ratings:

5.3 L L83 GM EcoTec3 5300 V8 355 hp (265 kW) @ 5600 RPM 383 lb·ft (519 N·m) @ 4100 RPM
Ford Ti-VCT V8 5.0 L 385 @ 5750 rpm 387 @ 3850 rpm

Fords 5.0 L is a slightly more powerful motor than GM's 5.3 L. The 5.0 L is also better geared with a higher ratio giving it a much better feeling for power.

I suspect even if the 270 HP and 261 ft lbs of torque numbers are correct that the 4.1 rear end and weight savings are going to make the new Tacoma feel more powerful.

 

Thanks, Leaving Albuquerque to go North camping we start out at over 5400 feet and have to pull a five percent grade on I 25 to Santa Fe. Travel trailers have really taken over here for camping because like so many other places the weather can turn nasty in heartbeat. Those new motors are going to get put to the test in New Mexico and other mountain states.

 

Honestly at that altitude the only gasoline engine that will feel good with a trailer, even in a full sized truck, would be the Ecoboost or something else with forced induction. The Turbos put you back at sea level.

 

Just saw on another thread the numbers for the motor. 270 hp at 6800 rpm. 261 ftlb torque at 4600 rpm.

Not good at all.
that hp at 6000 rpm and a motor that really never sees anying more then 3 to 4 k normal is a problem.

Also local dealer told me the mpg will be +1 real life and that is about it.
