Broken antenna

I had to have the windshield repaired, and to do so the antenna had to come off, well turns out it had rusted pretty good down inside it, and when it was being unscrewed it broke.

Any ideas how to get the broken part of antenna out of the antenna mount?

And does anyone have any experience with these antennas?

Im wanting at least as good of reception as what the stock one gave, or better. Also if im going to end up having to replace the mount, im open to making it a power antenna if that is even possible.

Also more then open to any other antenna possibilities, haven't really had much luck with autozone antennas in the past, they just didn't preform as good as the stock in any vehicle i have had to use them on. so wanting at least oem reception quality out of whatever i get.

 

you could carefully cut a slit in the broken bolt with a dremel and use a screw driver to take it out? or maybe there is a way to get if from the back?

 

Mine just got broke off at a car wash last week. I tried to turn that chrome part that is broke in your picture thinking it was a compression collar but realized it was going to break if I forced it. I do believe now it is not intended to turn, just to hold the entire antenna mount while installing into the body work
What I did was drilled into the broken piece down in there and used a Craftsman easy out (not the square kind ) It drilled pretty easy, I did it in the dark in the driveway
the broken threaded piece down in there screwed out very easily and I just screwed in a new aftermarket shorty antenna ($12 at O'Realy's works fine so far)
you could probably just saw off that broken piece because it is fairly redundant and go after the threaded rod down in there .
Otherwise you may need the entire antenna mount from Toyota

if not getting a geniunely priced Toyota antenna stalk , the only place I can think of that might have a better quality antenna is at a truck stop where they sell those Bar-Jan CB radio accessories

 

that's not the antenna that broke, its the threaded mount stem that broke off.

the antenna is female like a nut and the mount has the bolt threads sticking up so you just need to replace the antenna mount.

if you put whats left of the stem in a vise you "might" be able to get the antenna to unscrew from it but with rust that bad who knows but try it.

that way there is no more need for removing it at drive through car washes

by the way, the fender must be removed to replace the antenna mount base either way

 

yeah, probably just going to go with the power antenna install, guessing i will have very limited options of on truck repairs for the existing anyway. Just got to find one that will work on a 04, sadly the one you linked (thank you for the link though, it was appreciated) stopped at 00

yep I fixed that, try it again, that's the one for the 04

not sure about the one you found, I never liked one size fits all stuff

 

Yeah that one does look better, looks like it is a auction as it already has bids, so while i wait for it to near the end, i'll test out removing that bit from the mount, i looked over the antenna and for whatever reason it is the male part, cause where it isnt rusted is all one solid piece, no seam that would show a threaded part, i also tried to remove it with a vise and it didnt budge at all. so maybe this truck had a aftermarket already. either way pretty sure on this one at least the antenna is the male part and i have time. just got to find a screw extractor small enough to get that other bit out.

 

Got the threaded bit out, it was very loose, as well as very rusty up top where it and the antenna broke apart, i was able to just use a hole punch to get a surface my drill bit would grab, then a small drill bit and when i started backing it out, the entire thing came with it.

 

well I had my 99 apart and done quite a few fords and chevys so that's what im going by, I never saw the male as part of the antenna on any of them.

I guess our 04's are different

thing is some ads say this fits the 04 Tacoma and some say it wont. do some checking but I think it should fit any vehicle. often its best to go to the manufacturer to see what they say. most guys selling stuff on ebay are clueless as far as fitment details about what they are selling.

I have the same problem and I am going to buy a new mast and stubby trade antenna next week. There is no way to remove the rusted nub

 

Least now we know, going to test out a replacement mast from azone before i bid on the power antenna, once i got it out, the inside part wasnt rusty, so a replacement "should" work

 

careful as it might happen again if the mast is faulty/rusty

 

replacing the full mast, and going to coat any exposed areas in dielectric grease to help keep the rust down, considering this one lasted 11 years or so i figure the replacement should last a while, biggest issue is, if rust got down below where you can see and into the mount antenna wire, no replacement mast is going to do squat for getting a good signal, might end up doing a full replacement anyway, but going to start with the cheaper option first of replacement mast.

 

lots of parts trucks in the for sale section, you can probably pick up the antenna base and wire part for a song.

just be aware, while I don't think it fits or mounts any differently, the 96-00 years have female antennas and male bases. only the 01-04 years have the female bases and male antennas. as long as you get both parts I don't see any reason the 96-00 wont work just fine on your truck

 

Noted, im kind of ocd on getting the right year for the part and even the part itself, im totally cool if the part is used in multiple models across years, but i am not a fan of "rigging" something

 

im like that too and maybe its just me, but to be honest, with getting everything brand new oem from Toyota only costing $67 plus shipping that's what I would do. see the links above if you agree.

no way in hell I would even consider to reuse that base with it split and messed up like that which is why that one rusted in the first place and if im going to pull the fender off to replace it im damn sure not putting anything in there but brand new replacement parts, but that's just me

 

its funny you should mention that, i actually called my local toyota dealership and checked on a official full replacement, they are charging $50 so i said, sure order it, and get me a set of spark plugs, and the gaskets for the differential drain and fill lug nuts while your at it, cause im going to be changing all of that this weekend, figure, in for a penny in for a pound, doing that much maintenance, might as well fix the antenna right while im at it.

 

better double check what your buying because you have to buy two separate things, there is no one part number for the whole assembly, you might find out you only buying the $20 antenna for $50 and not getting the base
