+1 mpg IRL wouldn't surprise me. I'm think the new Tacoma gets a little better mpg IRL than the Colorado. Lots of people are getting sub 20 mpg out of the Colorado IRL which is supposed to be much better. Trucks have to move a lot of air and mid sized trucks are 90% of the size of there larger cousins.

CAFE only cares about mpg in their testing criteria. If the truck gets good mpg there that's all Toyota cares about.

I wouldn't believe anything from the dealers right now that isn't on paper. They are all guessing about so much stuff and you never know if he told you that just to sell you a 2015 today rather than a 2016 tomorrow.

No not a dealer push other then when he said that if I'm not happy with the taco now for MPG and Towing that Toyota is not for me in the taco and tundra. He said I sould look at a F150 or dodge.
And no they dont sell them and no he did not tell me who I should talk to.

As for the MPG they said they had one to use and display for one of the races and filled it ran it and filled it to get a real life MPG.

    Fuck Jeeps :D

    I hope @chris4x4 doesn't hear that!

Honestly Jeeps are great offroad but I don't think I could tolerate it on road. Rattles, squeaks, whistling noises, and mechanical issues seem to plague most of the guys in the offroad club I'm in. Sounds like the next generation Jeep might lose it's body on frame construction too :(.

No. Jeeps are terrible at both. 2 door Jeeps get okay mileage in town but then the towing is terrible due to the short wheelbase. Never buy a jeep to tow.

You seem pretty contradictory, or just bad at english maybe?

I wouldn't go off what a dealer says for mpg. Period. Wait for fuelly numbers.

my 2015 JK 2dr gets equal mpg on the hwy that my 2009 reg cab did, both sport 2.5 inch lifts but the jeep is on 33 instead of 32... in town mpg is worse, but i was running the gutless 4cyl. my 2014 reg cab 5.0 4x4 f150 with 2.5 lift and 33's also got equal mpg on the hwy, but worse in town. the jeep and ford work for towing the taco wasn't even worth trying. all that said, all joking aside, my next vehicle will again be a tacoma, it is the best middle ground imo after having all three in the past three years. hoping for big things from this new powerplant.

Yeah, comparing towing from a V6 Jeep to a I4 Tacoma doesn't make sense. TBH the short wheel base of a two door jeep absolutely blows on the highway when you tow. I come from a bit of a windy area and no one I know tows with there Jeep because things are too unstable. See lots of V6 Tacaoma's running around with TT though.

I agree with you that the Tacoma is a middle ground though. Definitely not a work horse like a full sized but you can do far more offroad with one.

I just couldn't buy a Jeep unless I was going for just a trail rig that occasionally saw road use. I've seen too many issues with stupid little things to convince me to go that direction. Last week a buddy on the trail lost a caliper bolt on a hill on a couple of year old JK! WTF?

so many ppl jump up and buy a full sized because they think they want/need it then later bitch about parking it at the mall and so on... always entertaining! i also see a lot of guys towing with tacomas in my area, usually small'ish boats, 4 wheeler/utv's or snow-machines, they're all happy enough. i haven't towed very far with a 2dr jk or very much, ever, just small bush fishing boats.

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
By increasing thermal and detonation efficiency.

The stroke and bore multiply the force of the detonation acting on the crank and generally higher displacement will generate more torque. New technologies (such as direct injection) increase the detonation efficiency, giving you more power and energy out of your fuel allowing for more torque compared to a similar displacement engine without these technologies.

Am I understanding correctly that the new engine (270 hp at 6000 rpm, 261 tq at 4600 rpm) is pretty much the same output as the 1gr except for the higher hp number at really high rpm? How are they different? Seems unimproved to my untrained eye if we are ignoring the transmission and weight.

Yes, ignoring things this engine is similar to our 4.0L with the RPM numbers 15% higher.

With a 4.10 rear end it shouldn't be a problem. This engine is going to rev a bit higher than most people would like to see.

    Not at all.
he said it would be +1 mpg over what they get now.

and no sales pitch as he told me to look at ford and dodge, from another dealer as he did not sell them.

Short of it was toyota did not offer much of a truck when it come to MPG and towing.

And their test was scientific? How was it driven, how was it loaded, did they have an identically configured '15 to compare?

Yeah, MPG is not Toyota's strong suit for sure. The Tundra with the 4.10 rear is a beast for towing though. Just crappy MPG like my sig says.

As for the Tacoma mpg I'll wait for a bunch of IRL numbers. After a half dozen or so reviews we should know mpg pretty accurate. Everyone drives different.

Tundra has a 4.3 rear end with the 5.7L tow package.

    Head unit. That's it.
So, with bigger rear end gears, and higher revs, there will be a possible increase in fuel efficiency?

I don't much care about the motors, (male or female) or their numbers, as they greatly out perform my 2.7 I4.

My question is why did they change it?
