I have a 2013 DCSB OR with the 4.0. Didn't notice until I finished pouring in the oil that I had used 5w 20 Mobil One Full Synthetic instead of 5w 30. So, my question is should I go ahead and bite the bullet and shell out another $37 on 5 qts of the 5w 30. Or will I (my truck) be ok using the 5w 20 until the next 5k oil change. I'm not towing or hauling any heavy loads but I do live in Ga and its hotter than hell down here this time of the year.

I've seen this mistake made more than a few times and odds are you would never have a problem. If I did it I would leave it alone until next oil change. Honestly people run the wrong oil weight all the time and never notice. I would be hard pressed to say you will actually cause any long term damage with that oil.

That being said the lower weight could cause some slight changes to your VVT-i that could hurt your fuel economy but who knows where the cut off is for VVT-i and oil weight. Also, most oils follow a linear relationship with heat so the hotter the engine runs the lighter the 5w-20 oil will be compared to a 5w-30.

Don't go longer than 3k miles on that oil, if you don't want to change it now. That oil's only purpose is gas mileage. Not engine protection against contact wear.

False, don't fall suspect to advertising claims. I expected better from you.

EDIT: Have run multiple different oil weights in the same engine and had the oil analyzed by black stone. No difference in wear patterns.

Only speak the truth. My sources are extremely reliable and accurate. Expect no less from me.

I am only going off of testing data. Nothing from advertisers.

Now, for other engines, not the single VVT-I 1GR, changing viscosity can have severely damaging effects. Due to thin materials, tight tolerances, and tolerances of oil pumps. I do not speak for those engines.

Do I personally think it will hurt anything? Nah. Do I think $37 is worth it for peace of mind? Everytime.

    Too few to list.
$37 bucks for peace of mind? I do know that the dual VVt-i's uses 5/20 same engine class but little difference internals. I try to stick to manufacturer suggested weight most of the time.

This is real simple. What season are we in, and more importantly, what are the average temperatures of the OP's location during the day?

Good. 20 weight oil is only good to 14-15 degrees Celsius. Otherwise known as 60 degrees Fahrenheit ambient. Not 90. Combined with the EPA mandated no more than 900ppm ZDDP, that oil fails in summer temps quickly. It can't stand the heat. Plain and simple.

Single VVT-I 1GR, Don't run it. At the end of the day, it is your engine though. Do your own thorough research if you don't believe me. It'll make you that much more informed, and able to protect your investments better.

you should be just fine for the normal oil change interval, the difference in viscosity at higher temps in minimal.

It can't stand the heat? Oil fails when its too warm outside. Did I read those two sentences right? Seriously?

Last time I checked oil temps run into the low to mid 200's and sythentics can run in the low 300 degress all day long. So outside temp has zero impact on this discussion unless we are talking arctic type temps where cold crank comes into play.

OP dont sweat it. Change it next time. You could run 5w-20 till the end of days with zero impact on engine wear.

If the vehicle is still under warranty, best to use the recommended viscosity.

Why take the chance of Toyota denying a warranty repair in saving $37?

$37 man.... $37. How much is your truck worth? You probably spent $40 on dinner the other night. Just spend the money and put the right oil in.

You guys act like hes running ATF or diff oil in his engine its still 5w- the 20 and 30 make such little difference on a daily driver that it wont hurt anything.

Yes I understand the VVti engine are a little more strict on swapping viscosity but its not like going from a 10w-30 to a 20w-50...

I run 5w-40 instead of 5w-30 in my engine and 75w-140 instead of 75w-90 in my rear diff.. its fine.
