Corona Pass is finally open to the top, over here in winter park. It's the old train route from before the Moffat tunnel was built(pre 1925). Cool stuff up there. Dirt bikes can actually summit and come down the other side over into rollinsville/Nederland. Never heard of a truck though. Anyone want to try? I've been up here 15yrs and haven't done it

Thanks for the invite! Sorry, we ran up for a picnic up the poudre with the kids. I didn't see your post until just now. We Had a good time. Oh and yeah I hope the erosion digs out a few rocks in the next year or so.

From the east side they call it Rollinsville Pass. And back in the late 80's you could drive the entire thing and pass through a tunnel near the top. The tunnel collapsed one winter and they never connect it with a road. I am willing to bet that the dirt bikes are using goat trails to get across from one side to the other. But it would interesting to see stuff on the west side. There used to be a huge trussel for the train on the west side.

There was a guy years ago trying to re open it. Then a boulder fell and killed him up there, that was the end of that. I've hiked up to it. Never seen it open to go over with a vehicle though.

I call it Rollins Pass from either side. There's a lake, trailhead, and the old townsite of Corona on the west side, but the actual pass' official USGS name is Rollins and that's what signs on both sides say. I can't find any source for how the Corona Pass name got started, but there sure seems to be a lot of use of it.

I've been up from both sides. Last time I was up there, a few years back, and based on current Google imagery, both the trestle on the east side of the pass (pass, not tunnel - still on the west side of the trail/road and probably the one CoTacoTRD is talking about - there's actually two, known as the Twin Trestles in an area called the Devil's Slide) as well as the piece down at Riflesight Notch (which is part of a big circular curve for elevation gain that has a specific name I can't remember right now) are still there. You can only hike the road section with the trestles - the driveable road to the tunnel is above it.

There is a way across that four wheel vehicles could use, but last I heard it had been closed/blocked off/fenced/whatever. It's not even shown on the MVUM. On the east/Rollinsville side it actually goes up from Yankee Doodle Lake/the end of Jenny Creek. Every time I can recall being up there the gate has been closed though. On the west/Winter Park side it meets up at the junction between the hikeable road, driveable road, and short stretch down to the tunnel. Basically right where you can first see Yankee Doodle Lake. It's very steep, loose, and prone to erosion right there which is why I thought they'd blocked it off to all motorized traffic. You can see it on sat imagery: https://www.google.com/maps/@39.9387377,-105.6537176,999m/data=!3m1!1e3!5m1!1e4?hl=en And in these two pictures taken in 07:

BTW, they're still trying to reopen the tunnel. Article from Feb of last year: http://www.dailycamera.com/boulder-...road-reopening-remains-controversial-24-years and the website of one of the main groups: http://www.moffatroad.org/RPRA/RPRA_Home.htm

Wow that was great info acidchylde. I took a look at the Gmaps link and it appears there's is a way to get completely across. Now if it is open or if it is gated is another question. Screenshot_2015-07-20-04-28-23.jpg

Yeah I'm up there a lot. But that trip was awesome.

Yeah they have been trying to re open it for sure. The link was posted last year too. Of all the years people have tried no one has succeeded. My best friend lives up there so it's nice it's not open because it keeps the traffic down :)

Amazing! I have been on that road (pretty sure anyway) when I went to summit mt Lindsay. Long, rough road. Congrats and your truck will love you forever!

So I feel the need to re-gear as I am feeling a bit undergeared. @lotsoftoys , I'm hoping you may have some insight.
I'm posting here to avoid the plethora of opinions in the 1st gen thread as not everybody there understands what driving around in Colorado is really about.
I have 4.10's now with 33's, 5 speed transmission. What do the local guru's recommend?

Yes, I've done a search and the answer is a wide range of opinions.
I want to wheel with out frying the clutch but also want to be able to do 75mph with the tach in the 3000rpm range, give or take. Stock tires were around 2800 rpm at that speed.

It's my understanding that 4.56 will put me back to near stock. But I'm also questioning the extra rolling mass of the tires and the added wind resistance of a lift, plus the uphill grade that is Colorado.
4.88 is not much lower than 4.56, but would this be too high on the rpm's at interstate speeds?

Go 4.88s and then upgrade to 35's, and be in the same situation. :)

I'm in the same situation with 33's and 4.10s, and sometimes I just say F-it and stay in 4th gear. If you ever want 35's, get 4.88s.

Lol, yep, living in 4th gear. But really missing any kind of acceleration at this point.
I think my actual working gear ratio with the bigger tire at this point is 3.73,
The ratio calculators I'm playing with say I need to be at 4.51 to be back to stock, or, 4.56 in this case.

If I upgrade to bigger tires someday, it'll be directly to 37's and a solid axle. But I need a new daily driver first. :)

    Stuff and junk and things...

I ran 4.88's with 285's for a couple years. Road trips weren't to bad as I could put the cruise at 85 and pulled hills no problem, the SC helps too. I now have 315's and am almost back to stock gearing. If you don't plan on going up to a 315 or 35 4.56's will be perfect to get back to "stock" gearing with the larger tires.

This is one chart I found. The rpm difference between 4.56 and 4.88 is only 175rpm.
Chart is based off 95-04 Tacoma 5 speed.

This helps :) I may dabble in a few different metric tire sizes, so 4.88 may be the ticket.
The truck is being used more for off road now than it ever has been since I decided to scrap the Scout. I am leaning towards getting a new daily driver and then going full retard on the Taco, but in stages.
