Just wanted to post the result of the additional phone calls I made today. Two dealerships just said no, you can order them yet. The other one was very helpful and said that very soon he can put in what he called a "preference" when Toyota sends each dealership their set allotment of initial Tacomas. The first trucks that hit the ground are not allowed to be pre-ordered according to him but they can request that they send a specific model although it doesn't mean they will get it. Too the guys that were able to order them already, maybe you guys got lucky, because I have called 8 dealerships and this is the closest I've gotten so far! I am on a contact list for two of them so I will post when I get more information.

FYI - My wife has sold for a Toyota dealership for over 5 years now. Not a major metro dealer, yet a strong significant dealer. I went to her store today to get real answers from their tapped in computer to see in my own eyes. No more speculation.

Here's how it works. A dealer has the ability to earn the right to order x number of trucks based upon their previous sales and CSI (customer service index) scores, market penetration of the brand/specific models and other factors, called "allocation". From that allocation they can request a "preference" of model and options, color etc. that get delivered first to their store, either for the showroom, special events, or an anxious customer. This is by no means guaranteed, they just take it into consideration with a new year/model launch (this is what I think some here are considering ordered for them). This preference could get bumped down the list and delayed if for example there's a run of dealers requesting a specific color and package etc. or even if a manufacturer like Dupont is having trouble delivering a specific paint color (this has happened before on our request for a bronze Venza a few years back).

This dealer is located in the Midwest or Chicago market and have one, yes one allocation for July, for my own request placed last week (double cab 4x4 sport, JBL w/nav in black). Supposedly I will see mine, if all goes well, in October. Yet we entered it last week and it still hasn't been scheduled for a estimated build date. So today we did a search of all US dealers and found delivery confirmations (estimated dates) of about 30 trucks that will be built and delivered from between the two production plants in Baja and San Antonio in July, and sent to the highest rated dealers to arrive throughout August. That is for the entire country at this point! Now maybe more will be scheduled each day to fill in more, but obviously it's going to be a while before most of us see any. Supposedly each dealer in the Chicago market (MN, WI, IL, IN) will get one in late Sept.-early October. Right now the Chicago market has confirmed July production orders for 100 Tacoma units with just a couple of those 100 are in the 30 that showed up scheduled to deliver in Aug.

^^^^ this is what my dealer told me also in NJ. He placed the order for me but apparently they are one of the higher volume Toyota dealers so he said chances are very good that their request will be filled. He also has a personal relationship with the regional guy from Toyota who has some say in who gets what.

I was also told that the cars are being rolled out west to east with the east coast getting orders filled last. This is why you can look in their computer and see pending inventory in a dealer west of the rockies but nothing east of the Mississippi

don't forget your allocation amount goes down if your dealer is not an exclusive Toyota dealer (ie: they sell more than just Toyota/Scion)

when I allocated my 14 4Runner (in Sept/Oct-2013 -- delivery in Dec-2013 cause they only make them in japan), they were only allowed 3 vehicles at my dealer for the first round.

since my dealer is dodge/Chrysler/Toyota dealer they are on the bottom end of allocations so I have to wait until Aug-01 or Aug-15 to put in my allocation.

Does anyone know how to find out what specific dealers pay for their vehicles?
I'd like to know the exact price my local dealers have paid for the truck, that way I know my realistic negotiating room. My sales guy is already starting to feed me the idea that if they sell a vehicle below MSRP they aren't going to stay in business.

These trucks are going to sell like hot cakes, no question about that, and because of that I likely will be paying more than someone interested in buying a less popular model, I've accepted that, but I don't want to get hosed either. This will be my first time buying a new vehicle and really any vehicle. My current truck my husband and his father negotiated since it was he who wanted the bigger truck and not I. He got to deal with all that. I just put a cap on the check I would write.

usually the only person that knows that is the owner of the dealership. that's more closely guarded secret than the coke/KFC formula.

Plus, even if you could see the actual invoice, that doesn't include kick-backs from the mfgr and other incentives. When we call someone a "car salesman" it isn't a compliment.

The best way to not get ripped off is to go to multiple dealers and see who will give you the best deal. If you just go to one dealer they will try to fleece you.

Consumer Reports will sell you the information you seek, including all hold backs, kick backs, factory to dealer incentives etc. Obviously at this stage, it's all about supply and demand, so dealers will be in the driver's seat. If you wait till next year, when dealers have unsold trucks on the lot, you'll be in a better position to negotiate a more favorable (to you) price. That's my plan.

I've currently got an offer from a dealer to sell at $1,000 off MSRP... Thought that was pretty good considering supply and demand will be huge at first.

That's pretty good, especially if you have history with that dealer. I'm gonna sit back and see what the Limited prices at.. and I'm sorely tempted to get a F-150 Lariat, with the current promo of so called "employee pricing", it's $10,000 off MSRP (-$6000 employee discount and -$4000 delivery whatever discount), and I haven't even put my negotiating skills to use yet
