I was expecting the tacoma to gain a little torque not lose it.

They will likely say the gearing and weight will offset the small decrease in torque. They may be right with that. Towing capacity has gone up, and Toyota does use the standardized towing testing protocol for the business.

I think the main goal was to maintain current performance as much as possible but with better tech and MPG.

Christ, the 4.0 L Dual VVT make 270 ft lbs at 4000 RPM. That's not much better than the 3.5 L. The way people talk about it on here you'd swear Jesus runs a 4.0 L Dual VVT in his Tacoma

The 6 speed plus 4.30they using has gears setup lower than A750 all way up to 5th. 5th is the same and 6th is higher.
So with 4.30 gears if you are below 5th you will be burning more fuel than 4.0 L .
What that means for you and towing in mountains. Your fuel average maybe be much worse with new truck than what 2gen would achieve. With less torque you are pretty sure you will not see 5th or 6th ever while towing.
On empty you may get marginally better MPG ,,, question is $3000 price difference buys you how much more fuel?

I think the new Tacoma has 4.10 gears, no? I could be wrong.

Also, key word is anything below 5th. Most vehicles cruise in 6th. If you're flying through the gears back and forth you fuel economy is going to shit the bed no matter what. As for towing I don't see how you get much worse than 7 mpg. That's what my Tacoma was getting with a trailer. Made me furious the first time I towed our trailer with it.

Toyota Eng said there are only two ratios now, 3.90 and 4.30. Assuming 3.90 is for 2wd non pre-runner trucks.
That would mean Everything else would get 4.30.
You can not cruise on 6th unless you are running small hills (or flat ground) and your engine does not have a lot of low end torque.
So if you getting 6 speed transmission I would would think truck would get tons of more Torque to use it. otherwise you will be riding low gears.
I dont know why you getting such low numbers. I only see 7mpg on my Tacoma when its in 4Low :D

    What a train wreck. I wonder what the MPG will be? Ford's 2.7L Ecoboost gets 18/23 in a 4x4 SuperCrew while making 325hp and 375 ft-lbs (@ 3000RPM). 0-60 in 5.7 seconds.

From what Toyota has shown us so far, they shit the bed. Shitty torque, massive price increase, and Angry Birds Pig nose grill. I really wanted to get a Tacoma as I don't need a fullsize, but if I get a faster, more fuel efficient, larger truck for the same money, why not?

I was surprised to see it listed as Dual VVT-i and not VVT-iE. The word around the zoo is this engine could atkinson-otto switch. My understanding was that regular assed dual VVT-i can't pull that off. It doesn't make any difference at this point, I just want to know for the sake of knowing. The conflicting information is frustrating.

The reason the Tacoma never got the dual vvti 4.0L is because this new van/car motor is a step down from it. Imagine the uproar if we already had the 270 hp 1GR. I really wanted the "3rd" gen to be my next truck but with more and more info coming out it seems like the 2015 is better.

They added a sunroof and increased the price by 3k. No thanks Toyota de Mejico.

Hang out in the towing threads. 7 mpg is pretty average with a giant 4000 lbs marshmellow of a travel trailer in tow.

As for cruising in 6th all modern vehicles with 6 speed automatics that I've been in stay in 6th unless they are going up a grade or into the wind. I'm sure Toyota made sure the ratio is right for 6th.

You have over simplified how manufacturers gear vehicles. Trucks with tons of torque ride the high gears. Trucks with the right amount of torque run all the gears. Trucks short on torque run the low gears. Manufacturers always match the engine to the transmission. The new Tacoma will use all the gears when unloaded, and stay under 5th when loaded like most trucks. Even my F150 likes to cruise in 4th when it's towing, but it still gets 13 mpg doing that.

I'm in the same boat, but I'm also a guy who keeps a vehicle for 15 years and have doubts about the long term reliability of the twin turbo engines. Hence, my "sure bet' on the Tacoma instead of "gambling" on the Ford twin turbo engine.

Why are we all still blabbering away about how shitty the next taco's gonna be... Whoever buys it, and you know who you are... Don't expect me to give you the 2 finger nod. Its just not a "proper" 3rd gen. Towing may be a problem, but getting on the on ramp will be way more fun. And don't complain that Toyota did this, the EPA is to blame here.

Your V8 Ford has more than 100+ Lb-ft than Tacoma 4.0L V6 and at slightly lower RPMS.
So yeah with the same load you will be able to cruise on 4th's (which is 1:1 ration pretty much on all vehicles) rather easily compared to Tacoma.
If both trucks use the same 3.73 ratio
    3.73 x 266 = 992.3 lb-ft to the wheels
    vs
    3.73 x 387 = 1443.51 lb-ft to the wheels on your Ford.
So no kidding of course you can run on 4th and get better MPG when you towing the same trailer.
Thats my point with the low end torque..
